Checking the Charges

Ever see a registration fee for a dance or worship arts conference and wonder why? There are several factors that go into determining whether an event can be hosted free of charge or if registration fees are necessary. I want to share with you a little bit of the happenings behind the scenes to get a better understanding of the charges...

FREE CONFERENCES AND EVENTS
It is easier to host free events when the facility, speakers, and sponsors are able to support or eliminate any financial expenses tied to the event. For my first three dance conferences, I hosted the gathering free of charge (to attendees), but the truth is, I paid for them out of my own pocket as a love offering to the dance community.

For my very first conference in 2003, the church donated the building, although we returned 10 percent of the offering back to the church. The food was donated by members of the church and all of the teachers (three of us) donated their time to teach the participants. For the evening dance concert, we received a freewill offering. What may not have been as obvious were the other expenses that went into preparing: administrative costs (printing, postage, ink), and hotel accommodations (I lived outside of the immediate area and the event started early in the morning). Unfortunately, many of the participants were not big "givers" so there was no profit derived from this conference (and I operated it at a natural loss, but a spiritual gain!)

My second conference moved to a larger facility. Though the church was donated again, we still gave a love offering for participation. In addition, I had to pay for the food to feed the participants myself. Expenses also increased. I now had a website, more printing costs (brochures and registrations forms), postal expenses (mailing out information), decorating fees, and gave the janitor a cleaning fee. We again received a love offering for the conference, but it did not cover the expenditures of the event.

The third conference proved even more challenging. The location that was donated before now came with a rental fee. The conference was still free for participants, food was still included, and administrative costs continued to grow. Since I was working a full-time, well-paying job, this was not an undue burden. To make things even more interesting, I moved to Las Vegas and still hosted this conference in Los Angeles, CA. This meant that I had to travel to get there for meetings and for the conference. (Do you see where this is going?).

PAID CONFERENCES AND EVENTS
After relocating to Las Vegas, the ballgame changed completely for my 4th event. Venue rentals for hotels, churches, and community centers proved to be expensive in this city. Since most people visit Vegas for vacation, I decided to host the event at a hotel. Many hotels have large food and beverage minimums or require hefty fees for meeting room rental space. In addition, bringing speakers from out of town entails flights, hotel arrangements, and love offerings. This did not include sound, decor, administrative costs, or transportation! All of this had to be factored in and a registration fee was charged. Although the experience was phenomenal, the expense far outweighed the return! I learned to make adjustments for the future.

By my 5th conference, I'd learned how to budget more carefully. I scaled down the size of the venue, looked for cheaper meeting room space, and narrowed down the list of invited speakers. I raised registration rates that included food served by the hotel and offered a better conference overall. We ended up being able to meet all budgetary needs for the conference!

I will be hosting my 6th conference in two weeks. Over the years, I have learned that it takes an army of supporters behind the scenes to move into success. Although ministry costs when delivering on a level of excellence, the return on investment always outweighs the natural expenses. There are some hosts who are able to "sponsor" their own conferences and workshops. As value increases, others may buy ad space, make donations, or provide in-kind gifts that will reduce the overall cost of the gathering.

Next time you consider attending a conference based on price, consider all that takes place behind the scenes. There is great value to be found in gatherings of all levels. The key is to consult God concerning which events to attend and seeking Him for the provision. As is is often said, "Where God guides, He provides."

Go Where You Have Favor

Hearing the voice of God clearly will change your life forever! For at least a year, I have been exclaiming "Let GOD do it" in social media, to friends, and in my daily life. I had no idea how powerful those words would really be in my life and ministry.

Earlier this year, I was making plans to head to Chicago to be a vendor at a conference. After calculating the cost for airfare, hotel, food, and weighing it against the expected return, I heard the Lord say, "Go where you have favor." I decided not to take the trip. About a week later, I got a phone call to teach at a conference in Georgia on the same dates that I would have been in Chicago!

On June 4th, I was scheduled to preach at a worship service where Reign Dance Company was in attendance with me. The prophet of the house began to speak a word over our ministry and was accurate beyond belief. Then he said, "You are going to South Africa!" We all rejoiced, even though we were not sure when this was going to happen.

Three weeks later, I boarded my flight and headed to Georgia for the dance conference. I truly enjoyed teaching and sharing the company of so many dancers hungry for the Word of the Lord! On the final night, I participated in a group dance piece and received another prophetic Word from the Lord! In the audience were visiting pastors who were introduced to the congregation, but I did not catch where they were from.

After service, I was standing at my table and a minister approached me and introduced himself. He then said that he was from SOUTH AFRICA and that he would like to bring me and my dancers there! (My dancers had not taken this trip with me, mind you...) Not only was this invitation legitimate, we will be going to South Africa on a Missions Trip October 6th-17th, 2011! LET GOD DO IT!!!!

Motion Sickness

Yesterday, the thought of motion sickness came to my mind. Too many praise dancers are focused on precision movement, "gigs," garments, and recognition and forgetting GOD. Anytime something becomes popular, the temptation to pervert its original design also becomes magnified. We should not want to promote the notion that dance ministry is a form of entertainment, social club, or extra-curricular activity. Although some may disagree with me, these people may not understand the true responsibility of those that labor in the gospel.

Motion sickness is also known as simulation sickness. It causes fatigue and tiredness. This type of sickness results from discord within the body. (Source: Wikipedia) Herein lies the problem for masses of dancers! When we stop following the pattern that God has orchestrated for others, we allow Him to give us direction for those we are uniquely called to impact. Wisdom can be gained by gleaning from the experience of others, but learning to obey God's voice will produce miraculous results!

Please help me read my Bible, but music, dance, and song in the Scriptures in the context of Godly representation were used to bring deliverance, prophesy, celebrate, testify, and magnify the LORD. There are also other instances of dance that denigrated, compromised, and served as gateways to idolatry and disobedience. Because many churches, dancers, and community leaders enjoy crowd reactions and want to accommodate the status quo, we have allowed spiritual anarchy to rule.

If we are of the Body and not healing the Body, why are we dancing? If we desire to do what we prefer instead of following God's direction, then dancing is aimless. When we get so used to "routines" and cannot operate in spiritual obedience, we lose value as effective gospel messengers. Dancing in itself does not please the LORD, obedience does!

NEWS FLASH!!! Dance ministry is NOT a requirement for your church! Although I am a proponent of the ministry of movement, I am also an advocate of the Body functioning in its proper place. The problem within many ministries today is a spiritual "Keeping up with the Joneses" proliferating throughout our congregations. Dance leaders are being haphazardly selected for the mere purpose of forming a dance troupe without regard for core beliefs, lifestyle, or anointing for leadership. It is better to leave a hole in the wall open than to fill that SAME hole with deadly explosives!

Much of the spiritual warfare happening within our borders today is brewing from the inside. Pastors and governing leadership MUST understand the spiritual importance of placing people in proper position, and the lasting ramifications of starting ministries without the leading of the Lord. It is time to sound the alarm and stand on the TRUTH of the Word!

This structural damage taking place in our churches is now spilling into the streets of our communities and across the Nations. Wounded soldiers from the dance ministry battlefield are starting external ministries with bleeding hearts. Others, running from the shrapnel of words and ungodly behavior are hiding in spiritual caves and going "underground" when they are internally yearning for ministry to come forth. What have we allowed to happen in our (supposed) sanctuaries? These experiences are NOT a requirement to dance for the Lord!

Praise God for the many healthy ministries in the churches and the community that have been started with pure intentions and ordained by God. Not all external ministries are rogue, just as many church leaders incorporate proper prayer and reliance on God before setting leaders in place. Because many dancers desire to move outside of the appointed time, these war stories continue to mount. We must all rely on God to serve in the area that brings Him glory and leads other to Christ. If our current ministries are marred by fighting, rebellion, dysfunction, and disunity, we must humble ourselves and pray.... NOW!

In Remembrance of Me?

If our hearts are not set on pleasing God in the worship arts arena, we will be remembered for the wrong reasons. How many times have we attended a concert or worship event to only to ask ourselves, "What is WRONG with this picture?" Although there will always be dancers whose priorities are elsewhere, those of us who love the Lord with our entire existence will aim to please Him only.

Here are some questions that we should ask ourselves regularly:

Should I remember a creative hairstyle more than the message?

Are those eye-catching garments really more of a fashion show than a tool for ministry?

Does the general personality of the ministry promote anti-social behavior, callousness, or an unfriendly demeanor?

Is there a lot of joking, disrespect, talking, or carelessness taking place when there should be focus and unity?

Do the garments serve as a example of a "striptease" show more than reverence for the Creator?

Do electronic devices hinder the ability to worship or encourage others because many are consumed with giving or receiving updates on social networks and text messaging?

Are there more people observing others praise and worship than there are actually worshipping Him?

All that we do should cause others to remember the cause of Christ. If we spend our time consumed with our own preferences, desires, needs, choreography, dressing room space, line-up on the roster, and other self-centered priorities, we can guarantee that we will not be remembered as those who gave complete glory to God.

This process requires constant evaluation of our own motives, Bible reading, prayer time, and living lives that please God while serving others. When we can barely recall the song danced and its intended message, we know that we have been disrupted by the flesh. Let's focus on the assignment of letting others glorify God our Father by seeing the good works that we do here on earth.

It is sad and unfortunate to hear the countless stories of those in dance ministry who are scarred by leadership. Is it often reported that many dance leaders are self-centered, egotistical, greedy, and downright unpleasant. Is this the type of leadership that Christ modeled?

We must be especially careful in the worship arts arena. Talented people often attract praise, attention, and semi-fame in many of the communities we impact. If we are not actively practicing humility and Christ-centered leadership, we can morph into ungodly examples of what NOT to do!

When someone is a leader, it generally means that they are out front, providing direction or instruction. This is a position of high responsibility and honor, but should never be an opportunity for terrorism in our churches and communities. Although there will always be people who are very sensitive and unable to take correction, how leaders deal with people should be more closely scrutinized. If you are currently a leader, how would your people describe you--- BEHIND YOUR BACK?

It is not how leaders are celebrated, lavished, or touted that makes us Christ-like. How we serve privately matters.

-How do we talk to others?

-Are our opinions based on the Scriptures or our own prejudices?

-Are we often argumentative more than instructive?

-Is the ministry growing (spiritually and naturally)?

-Do we refuse help from others and position ourselves as the focus of the ministry?

-Are we battling massive rebellion from those who should be following us?

-Are we accountable to other respected leaders who will tell us the truth about US?

-Are we studying books on leadership and praying for God to lead us daily?

Teachers are definitely held to a higher standard. Movement ministries have been plagued with countless stories of infighting, rebellion, mistreatment, and frustration. As a leader, what are you allowing to happen on your watch? The greatest weapons to combat toxic spiritual environments are by using the Word of God and staying in that prayer place. What is done in secret will be rewarded openly. We must also remember that what's done in the dark will be revealed by the Light.

Influent

The word "influent" was ringing in my spirit today. As a minister of movement and the Word, I always want to make sure that my words and actions are not in opposition. I want the life and testimony that I dance and preach about to bring inspiration and transformation to those who come in contact with me. I do not want to be a scandalous statistic of hypocritical Christians who use grace as an excuse for bad behavior. Scandal always pulls us down and does not uplift. Let us be set apart for the Master's use.

To be influent, one must impact a larger community to its benefit, and not its detriment. Literally, it means a factor modifying the balance and stability of an ecological community, and it also means inflowing. Are the dances that we select edifying the Body, or are we causing controversy when we debate each other about the "rules" of the ministry of movement? Is your ministry growing (naturally and spiritually)? Is there enough Word, discipline and love flowing through us for us to overflow into our churches, cities, and countries?

Some dance teams have yet to make an impact in the local church, much less the larger community of believers and non-believers. In order for us to make disciples, we must first become one. Kingdom work should never be an optional activity or be based on entertainment factor. Jesus was the most influential person that ever lived. I doubt that He sat around trying to devise eye-catching elements to help out His sermons, yet thousands sought Him regularly. As soon as He commanded miracles, they took place. He was obedient in all things, to the point of laying down His life.

Our extended reach cannot be the trappings of slick marketing, popular associations, gifted speeches, or flashy imagery. At the core, we must be directed to move by God, submitted to His will, loving His people, and finding contentment with the measure God has appointed to us. Yes, we can do the dances that will altar a Nation, but transformation must take place within us first so that we can continue to impact generations beyond our own lifetimes... for His name's sake.

***In March of 2007, the Lord inspired me to write about the importance of unity in the Body as it concerns worship. In August 2011, dancers, musicians, and singers will gather as one tribe to bring glory to God in Las Vegas, Nevada. Here is the original inspiration behind this movement and a preview of what's to come.***

In my time of ministering through dance, I have been (more often than not), the spectator in the waiting. Whether ministering during a dance concert, church service, or special occasion, there is a time to stand back and observe. Have I felt frustrated? Yes. Bored? Yes. Impatient? Yes. I have also experienced overwhelming joy, thankfulness, and the desire to break out into spontaneous praise. What is it that makes others seek to worship Him along with the dancer?

I agree that some dance presentations resemble a performance more than a ministry. Some ministries have been classified “angels” on the platform and deemed “divas” offstage. It is often a challenge to get up and “minister” in an atmosphere that has been saturated with entertainment.

It is at these times that I feel the most vulnerable. There is the mounting pressure to “set the atmosphere,” “tear down strongholds,” and “usher in the Presence of the Lord.” Several times after ministering before people, I have been approached by many who said that they “didn’t know how to respond to what they felt on the inside.” I do not believe that this is the design for public worship.

As a movement minister, I realize that I am not merely a spectacle for others to sit back and critique. For corporate worship to occur as a result of the dance ministry presentation, I realize my responsibility is that of a Praise & Worship “Usher.” In understanding my position as a dance minister, I agree with Michael & Vivien Hibbert’s statement in the article Expressing the Moods of the Holy Spirit: “The ultimate in worship is not the expression or worship, but the knowledge of His presence. It is not the music or the songs of the Lord or the dance – these expressions must come out of knowing Him- they must be a result of worship rather than being acts of worship.”

Worship Defined

I have realized that the definition of worship of today unfortunately, at times, is viewed as a one-person or small group responsibility (i.e. the recent rise of "Superstar" Praise & Worship Leaders and the explosion of Praise & Worship teams in most churches). Upon studying the Scriptures regarding worship, I found many instances of Worship, Incorporated. This is how Webster defines incorporate: 1) To unite or work into something already existent so as to form an indistinguishable whole: to blend or combine thoroughly 2) To form into a legal corporation b: To admit to membership in a corporate body 3) To give material form to: EMBODY.

One Hebrew word for worship is tsaba' (Strong's 6635) or tsbadah (from Strong's 6633); meaning, a mass of persons (or figuratively, things), especially reg. organized for war (an army); a campaign, literally or figuratively (specifically, hardship, worship): appointed time, army, battle, company, host, service, soldiers, waiting upon, war (fare). Tsaba'(Strong's 6633) to mass (an army or servants): assemble, fight, perform, muster, wait upon, war.

For instructions concerning New Testament worship, we see a few Greek words that point to the Lord’s desire for a unified body in worship. Episunagoge (Strong's 1997) from 1996; meaning, a complete collection; especially a Christian meeting (for worship): assembling (gathering) together. We also see this in a few other words: Homothumadon (Strong's 3661) unanimously: with one accord (mind), and in Sumphoneo (Strong's 4856) To be
harmonious, to accord or stipulate: agree (together, with). Sumphoneo is akin to the word Symphony. A symphony consists of many different instruments, but they all play the same song, in the same key, in time together, to be complete. This reminds me that, as a movement minister, I have to be careful not to think that the dance is the only component being used to impact the worship experience. It is indeed an awesome sight when all aspects of worship including instruments, singing, and movement function together to produce Worship, Incorporated.

The Incorporation Process

There are several passages of Scripture that highlight the importance of Worship, Incorporated. Let’s take a look at 2 Chronicles 29:27-29 (NKJV): “Then Hezekiah commanded them to offer the burnt offering on the altar. And when the burnt offering began, the song of the LORD also began, with the trumpets and with the instruments of David king of Israel. So all the assembly worshiped, the singers sang, and the trumpeters sounded; all this continued until the burnt offering was finished. And when they had finished offering, the king and all who were present with him bowed and worshiped.” Though the Lord has appointed many to dance, we must also remember that dance ministry is not assigned to everyone, but movement (bowing) was done by all of the assembly!

Yet another Scripture points to the power of corporate unity: “And Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God. Then all the people answered, “Amen, Amen!” while lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground.” (Nehemiah 8:6) We see here again, that all the people lifted their hands and bowed (movement) corporately. Just to make sure that we understand how powerful corporate worship is, 2 Chronicles 7:3 informs us that, “When all the children of Israel saw how the fire came down, and the glory of the LORD on the temple, they bowed their faces to the ground on the pavement, and worshiped and praised the LORD, saying: “For He is good, For His mercy endures forever.” Unity is essential to the worship incorporation process.

The Present Worship Report

We often use Scripture to talk about worship in spirit and in truth. Though the Bible accounts for us many instances of Worship, Incorporated, it seems as though, for a season, many factions of the worship department broke off into their own “companies.” The choir, praise team, musicians, dancers, and ministers of the Word often decided separately what was the most important concentration for themselves, while ignoring the corporate umbrella of congregational worship. Competition inevitably arises as to which unit is the most responsible for leading the people into a worship experience. Recently, I have begun to witness musicians, singer, and dancers participating together in corporate praise & worship in major congregations. A return to the biblical model has begun: NOW IS THE TIME!

Future Worship Projections

Not only was this a pattern for the past, but we are informed that future worship shall also be Worship, Incorporated. The Bible gives a several glimpses into the future worship portal: “All the ends of the world shall remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations shall worship before You." (Psalm 22:27). It is wonderful to see that neither denomination, race, nor geography will hinder the future of Worship, Incorporated as prophesied in Revelation 15:4: “Who shall not fear You, O Lord, and glorify Your name? For You alone are holy. For all nations shall come and worship before You, for Your judgments have been manifested.” Not only will this happen in the Earth realm, but in the heavenly Kingdom also: "All the angels stood around the throne and the elders and the four living creatures, and fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God." (Revelation 7:11)

The Bottom Line: Business Matters

Worship, Incorporated must lead to a return on the investment that our Heavenly Father has placed in us. Although He created each one of us uniquely and with great care, He orchestrated it in such a way that we as many members fit together. He has designed us to succeed and has plans to prosper us. We must realize that each of us is essential to the success of Worship, Incorporated. Like Jesus in Luke 2:49, I must be also about my Father’s business!

We Need More

We are being bombarded in the name of "Political Correctness." As I have listened to the news recently, there is controversy over the use of "Happy Holidays" vs. "Merry Christmas." Stories vary about employees who are told not to use the word "Christmas." This is nothing new. We have seen the use of 'Merry X-mas,' 'Seasons Greetings,' and the like. Santa, reindeer, and excessive spending are encouraged in advertising, commercials, and in stores. What is the larger statement here?

As I prepared for Christmas service one year, God gave me a revelation that I have held dearly ever since. I will share it with you. The word "mas" in Spanish means "more." When I see or hear the word Christ-mas it now means "Christ MORE!" In a culture that is trying to deny our Lord and Savior, should we not proclaim the name of the Lord even louder?

When we prepare to select songs and choreography for ministry, let's remember to employ the name of Christ Jesus MORE! Inspirational songs may be great, but as the Word says in Acts 4:12 (NKJV), "Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Our commission remains to spread the Gospel to every creature. There is no Gospel without Jesus Christ!

As ministers of the dance, we have many wonderful opportunities to minister the Word of God in many non-traditional settings and programs. As doors continue to open for us, let us never forget Romans 1:16, which states, "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes..." Review your current song selection and ministry pieces. Have you unconsciously omitted Christ? The world needs Christ now more than ever before.

Dance with boldness. Dance with authority. Dance with power. Dance in the name of Jesus!

Clothes Minded

Many times we have heard that David “danced out of his clothes,” but the Scriptures do not say that. (File this under "Dance Ministry Myths"). We must know what the Word says, not only about dancing, but about many of our long-held beliefs, traditions, and quotations.

2 Samuel 6:14, 20
14) Then David danced before the LORD with all his might; and David was wearing a linen ephod.
20) Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, “How glorious was the king of Israel today, uncovering himself today in the eyes of the maids of his servants, as one of the base fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!”

In the Hebrew (#1540-galah) the word for uncover here is not translated as naked, but to “reveal” or “remove.” He was wearing a linen ephod, but kings at the time wore elaborate robes. He appeared to be common in this sense (by only wearing linen- which was thin and breathable), thus experiencing ridicule by Saul’s daughter (and also his wife) for being “foolish.” David rebutted that he would be even more undignified! Priests wore linen as one of their garments. (King and Priest? Go Jesus!)

Not all dance in the Bible is praise dance, but was an essential part of Old Testament tradition and expression (folk dance). Miriam and David danced unto the Lord. Women, men, and children danced. The return of the prodigal son in the New Testament was celebrated with a party and dancing (Luke 15:25). Of course we have heard the infamous account of Herodias’ daughter, which resulted in the death of John the Baptist.

Since I will not turn this into a long rant, here is the summary: Praise unto the Lord in dance is an acceptable expression. Just because people are dancing does not qualify it as praise (not only dance, but singing, preaching, and more can fall into the category of entertainment when it pleases our flesh more than it pleases God- but I digress…). God is looking at our hearts, and we must seek to glorify him in all that we do.

Post No Bills

Have you visited a website, blog or discussion board and read messages completely unrelated to the topic in the comments section? Even if the comment is relative, someone may try to sneak in an advertisement for their own blog, website, or sales business. Ever open your email inbox and see a SPAM folder?

Shady marketing practices are nothing new, but why are Kingdom citizens adopting similar habits? There are many avenues for free or inexpensive advertisements that aim to provide these services to the community and welcome them. While our friends and relatives may become our supporters, we should not automatically enroll them in our sales forces.

It is standard now for many movement ministries to have eye-catching flyers, websites, postcards, and graphics to promote ministry-related events. Because we have a visual ministry, this can work very well to give the potential participant an idea of what to expect. Spread the Word, by all means, but when we become reckless self-promoters, we run the risk of being labeled opportunists and may even cause others to question our true motives.

In the ministry realm, we may not hear from someone until they have an event to promote. This gathering may not include your ministry as a participant, but in essence, an endorsement is being requested or implied. When we receive emails in our inboxes with a request to forward the contents to our entire lists, we have the option to oblige or not. We must carefully consider what we are sending! Constantly bombarding our friends and associates with every event happening worldwide may make us operate like e-blast services (which businesses charge for) instead of concerned friends.

If we want to share the good news about upcoming dance conferences, concerts, and products, it is natural to send that information to people who share the same interests. We should always grant people the option of whether or not they want to participate. They should have a choice whether or not their entire database or friends list receives your information. Forcing ourselves in the faces of others may not only get us rejected, but diminish our respect among others.

In public areas where construction is taking place, we may see the words "POST NO BILLS." This is a request by the builder for promotoers and advertisers not to place posters or advertisements in places where persmission has not been granted. Someone paid the price for the wood or other materials to be there. We do not have the "right" to obtain free advertisement from anyone without permission or invitation.

Comes from era before electronic communications. One way to advertise, especially shows, was to "post" or put up on building, lamp posts, etc., "bills" or advertisements. "Post No Bills" meant don't clutter up this space with your advertisements.

In social networking, the current trend is to "post" ads, flyers, and pictures on the pages of others without permission. If we do this in our own territory (websites, blogs, social media, etc), this gives supporters the opportunity to share the good news by choice. When we request associates and friends just to increase our marketing base, we may unintentionally (or intentionally) use each other for our own gain.

When I want to get the word out about an event, I contact a graphics designer (who I pay) to produce the image. If I want postcards with the image, I order postcards/posters/promotional items (for which I pay). To reach a larger audience, I may reach out to my radio or print media associates for advertising (and pay for the benefits). I also praise God for favor in these areas. There have been times that I have been blessed with complimentary graphics, ads, materials, etc, but I did not expect these services to be provided without blessing the provider.

Posting ministry or personal information on the pages, websites, homes, cars (ouch), and other areas without invitation or permission could very well mean that we are using our neighbors for our own gain. Only the Lord truly knows our motives. While some of us may innocently copy the practices of those around us, when we know better, we must do better. Consider your neighbor. Networking and advertisement alone do not make events and ministries successful, but can be a tremendous help. While promoting events and ministries greatly blesses the Kingdom, without honest motives, we only cause division. Ignorance is not a defense. When all is said and done, true promotion only comes from God!

Technical Difficulties

There is a difference between dance and dance ministry. The danger of focusing on technique as the prominent qualifier for dance ministers is that some will think that the power is in the movement. It is the Word that works. When we connect the movement with the Word, it comes to life in us and through us.

We can have emotional experiences and see movement that overwhelms our senses. This does not mean that a dance is anointed or lines up with the Word of God. Many talented individuals can move a crowd to its feet or garner thunderous applause. Imaging if the thunder of God met our dances with approval! Our ways must please God, including the motives behind our movement.

Dance technique gives us a broad vocabulary from which to communicate a message. When we exalt form over substance, we eliminate the Lord from the process. I have witnessed intensely technical ministry that received a "WOW" from the crowd but did not move a spiritual atmosphere toward the miraculous. Specific signs follow them that believe. Splits, leg extensions, and challenging physical feats may be amazing, but if there is no relevance to the Word going forth through them, the only thing on display are the works of the flesh.

All dance ministries are not the same, but we must remember that the Lord is Holy. We are set apart for Him and must study, pray, and remain pliable in His hands. If we are not careful, we will legitimately offend people with movements and garments that appear to be obscene. If we are truly ministries and not "entertainers," we will not focus on crowd reaction. If we want to move in a way that pleases God, we will be blessed to find an abundance of choreographic movement in the Scriptures.

The world may be interested in your resume and accomplishments, but God is not. Technical training is a great asset to the ministry of movement and should never be a hindrance. Let us always to remember to make obedience to Him our first priority. When we move under His direction and guidance, we will never miss a step!

"Boaster" Seat

This post may not prove popular, but must be brought to light. Many movement ministries have fallen into the deceptive practices of the world when advertising conferences, events, and ministries. Many of us have subconciously allowed competitive lingo and behaviors to direct us when trying to rally crowds to attend events and support our endeavors. Ministries even "stretch the truth" (Ok, outright lie!) to make the ministry seem larger or more powerful than it is. Power does not have to announce itself. True power illuminates its surroundings to the point that others will express how bright the light is.

Jesus told us that if He be lifted up from the earth, He would draw all men to Himself. This does not mean that we cannot let people know what is available to them with flyers and announcements, but let's make sure not to step on the toes of fellow laborers when doing so... Time for a spiritual motives test!

For instance, if we use the words "Best," "Biggest" "Most Anointed," or other descriptives words that imply superiority, we are heading to the danger zone. When we think we are the best or most excellent/popular/requested, the spirit of pride has already taken a foothold in our ministries and destruction is around the corner. Someone else may categorize our ministries in this manner, but if we are walking with the Lord, we will maintain a spirit of humility and not use the accolades of others as bragging rights.

This reminder also extends to our ministry biographies and website content. When we imply that we have the greatest ministry, we diminish the glory of God from shining in our lives and ministries. Years ago, one of my best friends read my online ministry and immediately told me, "When I read your bio, all I see is I, I, I!" Instead of arguing with her, I took a look at my bio and discovered that she was right! Although it was not my intention to magnify myself, I realized that I was following the world's pattern of self-introduction. I revised it immediately. It now says that GOD has blessed me to... HE directed me to... The LORD has opened doors for me!

For many of us, it is time to take another look at the written and spoken words that we use to describe ourselves and ministries. Yes, God uses people, but without Christ, we can do nothing. Let's take some time out today to review how we present ourselves to others to reveal if we are glorifying God or ourselves.

Who Cares?

Many in ministry start off with pure intentions, but that can change later down the road if we are not mindful. Along with ministry comes the lure of celebrity if we are deemed "great" at what we do. We must diligently avoid the trap that Lucifer set for himself in relishing the worship of others. We must also refuse to accept unjust criticism of those who seek to stop us in our tracks. Since dancers are often out front, we are open to compliments as well as criticism of what we do.

I recall a few critical moments from people who thought to give unsolicited advice after a ministry offering including comments like, "Next time, wear some shoes!" "You need to point your toe," "I would have chosen different choreography..." "You are anointed, but have no technique," and much more (since then, I have taken dance classes, but technique does not make an anointed dancer!). I have learned to chuckle at many comments over the years, but when I first experienced them, I was not so warm and welcoming.

On the other side, I often hear statements like, "You are so unique," "You are so anointed," and "I have never seen praise dance like that before!" While receiving compliments may be wonderful for opening doors, I must constantly tell my flesh that God gets the glory out of my story! I cannot let the opinions of people determine my dedication to service, one way or the other.

I said all of this to say that we cannot listen to unspiritual comments to determine our next move. David was harshly criticized by his own wife, but settled within himself that he would not be limited due to his title as king or position of leadership as he danced with abandonment. Who are we listening to today that may be causing us to stumble along the way?

"Dance is for the 'young people.'"
"What you are doing is not real ministry"

DON'T BE DISTRACTED OR DISCOURAGED!

Who cares about you? The Lord does! Let us not be overly concerned with people. There will always be advocates and antagonists, but the only opinion of us that matters is what God thinks!

Teach Me How to "David!"

Each generation seems to have several dance crazes that come out, especially in the Summertime. Some of these dances "miraculously" find their way into our churches during praise dance presentations (shocking, isn't it?). Nevertheless, the sight is more common than not. Many unassuming congregations have no idea that the dances done before them have been newly acquired from MTV and BET.

While teaching at workshops and conferences, I often ask the dancers to tell me who danced in the Bible. Most are familiar with David, and even fewer with Miriam. For most groups, the familiarity stops there. This week, I was blessed to teach a group of very young children at a Summer Arts Camp. During class, the Lord led me to teach them how to dance like David and Miriam. I led them in movement according to the descriptions found in the Scriptures.

We played a game called "Jesus Says..." similar to the traditional "Simon Says" response game. I would say, "Jesus says, 'Dance Like David!'" The children joyfully began to leap and whirl as instructed by the Word. They then replied, "That was FUN!" The experience reminded me that we still have a responsibility not only to train our children, but those who are in ministry as well.

How Did David Dance?

2 Samuel 6:14, 16
14) Then David danced before the LORD with all his might; and David was wearing a linen ephod.

16) Now as the ark of the LORD came into the City of David, Michal, Saul’s daughter, looked through a window and saw King David leaping and whirling before the LORD; and she despised him in her heart.

The Hebrew word used here for dance is karar, meaning to dance (i.e. whirl): - dancing (Source: The New Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible)

David reserved nothing for himself, but gave his all unto the Lord while dancing before Him. Leaping required his feet to leave the ground, and whirling would ensure that he danced in all directions! The sight of David dancing provoked his spouse to rebuke him for such an open display of abandonment (for which she paid a hefty price!).

Dancing is nothing new. The unique style in which certain individuals express it has often garnered the acknowledgment of having a dance or technical style take on the name of the originator. We all know that the true Originator of movement is the Spirit, who moved first in Genesis 1:2! Instead of learning the latest dance craze to demonstrate, wouldn't it be a wonderful exercise to train our dancers to learn the style of those who danced according to the Word? Instead of our children singing popular songs about dances (and doing them in church, school, and everywhere else), we would be blessed to hear them say, "Teach me how to David!"

Get Write, Church!

As many of you know, I have been blessed to publish my first book, Company Keepers: Dance Ministry Daily. This blog was the launching point for that book and many more to come. Obeying God is crucial! While writing daily on 365 different subjects, I was challenged, stretched, and strengthened. Out of that experience, I am blessed to assist others with the mandate to write the vision.

We are fooling ourselves if we think that people are not observing our lives beyond the platform. Many dancers don glorious garments, display perfectly coiffed hairstyles, and have rehearsed the answers in advance in response to praise received from those who witness the dances ("Well, bless the Lord!" "No, don't thank me, thank God!" --While inwardly relishing in the comments made to them about anointing and skilled technical execution and repeating them to all who will listen...). Away from the spotlight, who are we, really?

There will always be critics. The Word declares that we are blessed when persecuted for the sake of righteousness. What if the things being said about us are true? Are we also known as money-hungry? Mean-spirited? Difficult to work with? Unfaithful? Argumentative? Controlling? Manipulative? Divisive? Selfish? While none of us may want to confess to these areas of weakness, if we keep hearing people say the same things about our character over and over again, we need an emergency appointment with God so that he is able to give us a much needed transplant.

Our good works should be known by those we work with, as well as to our surrounding friends, families, and communities. We cannot be consumed with defending ourselves against those who persecute us without cause. Any character flaw that is not submitted to the Lord's correction will affect our ministries in the long run. As much as it is possible, we should seek to have a good name as a byproduct of living lives submitted to the Lord. A well-crafted advertising campaign is not what makes a great name. Let's aim to serve the Lord both in word and deed.

GPS: God's Positioning System

Today, most modern cell phones and vehicles are equipped with GPS. The idea is that you will never be lost because you have step-by-step instructions on how to get to your destination. We can choose not to follow the prescribed instructions with the possibility of losing our way. GPS systems are not infallible; however, as they cannot anticipate changes in the road, detours, accidents, or other unexpected delays. God is not like that, He knows where we are going, how to get us there, and what is to come along the road.

Since God's Positioning System is best, why is it that so many in movement ministry are striving to compete, compare, and contend with one another? Many dancers are looking at websites of others and trying to "top" what they see. Others attend conferences and events and instead of being inspired, become envious and attempt to create the next "big thing" in dance ministry. Many more look at merchandising, clothing, books, seminars, and speaking engagements as a way to build a larger marketing base and make a quick buck. While the Lord gives us witty inventions, if we are only producing product to make the largest profit, but are not making a Godly impact on lives, who really benefits?

Beyond the spotlight, rivalries in dance ministry begin in the simplest form. One desires the dance ability of a fellow minister. Another feels skilled enough to choreograph pieces, but had not sought the power of the anointing in their lives. People follow leaders who they curse instead of bless, but hang on for the benefits and perks. Moments of disagreement become fractures in the Body when rumors are spread and speculation runs rampant via telephone, email, text, and social networking. Meetings to discuss the shortcomings of leadership develop into plans to overthrow the leader in rebellion. Division pits organizations against each other and breeds cultish behavior among dance ministry followers.

Inwardly, dancers begin to desire to be "the best," and "the most anointed," or "the expert," boasting as "the most requested," as several in the ministry clamor for positions of power. In the name of "Jesus," people invite themselves to events and demand to have their images placed on conference marquees. Trying to find common ground, others will lobby to convince others that Kingdom is about working together with them as they hold a special access code to our destinies.

When we sincerely serve the Lord with a pure heart, obey His Word, and give Him our very best, He will show us where we are to be positioned. Just as we learn to position ourselves through technical training to build strength, proper posture, and alignment, the Lord will position us successfully to prevent injury, correct us when needed, and point us in the right direction.

Going Through the Motions

Even though I have experienced people "borrowing" God-breathed dances many times, I am still not over the fact that praise dancers feel as though it is acceptable to blatantly copy one another. God is THE Creator. We are made in His image and likeness, which means that we each have creative ability within us. When we do not allow the likeness of God to operate in us, we have a form of godliness, but deny the power thereof.

Simply doing what others have done does not make us effective. Jesus said that we would do greater works than He did. There are pre-qualifiers for proficiency in certain areas of ministry. For example, Simon the Sorcerer became a believer, but thought that he could offer money to operate in the power of the Holy Spirit as witnessed through the apostles. Purchasing prophetic flags, props, an ark of the covenant, streamers, billows, tambourines, and garments does not endow us with the power of the Holy Ghost.

Desiring to get the results of others through dances that we have seen and embrace as our own can also be dangerous, especially when doing it under false pretenses. The Sons of Sceva saw the power with which Paul operated and decided that if Paul could do it, so could they. "Going through the motions" without seeking the Lord can be detrimental to our lives and ministries. The Scripture notes that unusual miracles were worked by God at the hands of Paul. How many dancers see unusual manifestations of the Spirit and then decide to mimic what they saw in an attempt to reproduce the effect? Lord, have mercy! Let us not operate outside of the assignment that the Lord has given us.

Many would argue that the dance is not ours. Several will say that as long as God is glorifed, it should not matter if we copy dances from YouTube, Facebook, or those we see in person. The same people will argue that movement is a ministry. If dance is not merely an activity, but a viable way to minister the Word of God, then the same principles of ministry apply to us as well. We cannot make up special rules and exceptions to justify those who are not willing to consult with the Lord. Though we cannot judge the intents of the hearts of men, the truth is that good intentions can never replace God's intention.

Unfollow the Leader

We have to be careful when we make decisions based on what looks popular. A current social networking site encourages us to "follow" and have "followers." What are the underlying implications of this in life and ministry?

In the ministry of movement, many of our woes are a result of people following what they see, instead of asking the Lord what to do. Garment controversy is largely related to the "follower" mindset ("Every one else is wearing it..."). Predictable movements are birthed out of a "watch and repeat" mentality (many similar movements seen among praise dancers for "heart," "love," "Jesus," "time," etc...). Countless people join organizations, ministries and churches based on where the crowd may be gathering. We cannot be led by outward appearances.

We must be especially careful when we join ourselves to certain leaders. The decision to connect or walk in covenant agreement with someone else can result in a blessing or utter destruction. Deciding to submit to a leader based on peer pressure ("I'm doing it, and so should you!"), perceived benefits ("Get your ministry license/ordination..." "Special doors will be unlocked for you..."), or popularity ("My leader is a published author..." "Our conferences are the largest...," "My mentor is on television...") can result in disaster if we are not following the Holy Spirit.

Sometimes, we decide to hook up with leadership without realizing that our choice is based on personal gain. Many dance ministers may feel as though aligning with a particular leader may give them more credibility, provide bigger platforms, and give access to a larger network of dancers to build associates. While this can actually be a byproduct of great relationships, entering into fellowship with people based on selfish motives reveals the true condition of our hearts.

Let us decide to follow God. Relationships that God joins together produce fruit and bring glory to His name. Praying and seeking the Lord for discernment will allow us to see who to join and who to avoid. It is indeed better to obey God rather than men.

Who's Buying? Who's Flying?

Jesus paid the ultimate price for us to move freely in Him. In the ministry of movement, dancers who plan conferences, special events, retreats, concerts, etc., may need to fly someone in as a guest. On the other hand, going to conferences and events out of our local areas may mean that we need to make travel arrangements ourselves in order to get there. As I was preparing for an upcoming event, I realized the benefit of receiving the price paid on behalf of another.

Searching for airline tickets can be a challenge for many reasons. The following tips will help us make the process easier:

Schedules
If you are purchasing a ticket for a guest, it is a good idea to consider the travel schedule. We may cause the traveler unnecessary stress by booking tickets with layovers that last several hours, do not provide enough time to transfer to a connecting flight, or involves multiple stops before reaching the final destination. If you've ever been in these situations, you may be able to identify with the need for extra prayer along the way.

Also, some travelers may need to arrive after a certain time or fly out early to honor previous commitments to work, ministry, or family. We should ask for these requests in advance and be able to collect this information in writing. When we purchase tickets early, not only will they most likely be cheaper, the best schedule will also be more practical to book.

If it is possible, we should not make our decisions simply based on what benefits our pockets the most. In the best of circumstances, direct flights are preferred. Unless the financial difference is major, blessing our guests with the least stressful journey will be appreciated and remembered.

Carrier
Some airline carriers charge baggage fees, others do not. While many guests may not require us to pay for baggage fees, it's nice to not spend the price of a plane ticket getting the bags to and from the destination. When we are flying, we may decide to "travel light" based on baggage fees. I personally remember one trip where I has to pay over $100.00 in baggage fees alone because I was also vending at a conference! Unless the profit margin is phenomenal, this may not be good for business...

Rewards
Praise God for rewards! Because someone else paid a price for a ticket, I have been able to reap the benefits. For example:

Free Flights: Many airlines reward frequent fliers with round-trip airfare after meeting so many miles or flight segments. In most cases, the person who earned the flight can give his or her reward to someone else! I have been able to fly for free or at a very minimal fee because someone decided to bless me with their miles or free trip ticket. I have saved LOTS of dollars not only for myself, but for ministry guests using this benefit. (Please Note: This is not the same as a "Buddy Pass" which often means that there is no guaranteed seating or schedule consideration. Let's not make things worse if we can avoid them.) Using the rewards system means a guaranteed seat and schedule.

Paid in Full
It is a blessing when someone is able to pay for a ticket to fly us to a ministry event! Even though the passenger benefits, the passenger does not necessarily have to be the one to pay for the journey. The "buyer" and the "flyer" do not have to be one and the same. The bonus is that the "buyer" does not get to claim the miles toward travel rewards, but the "flyer" does! How wonderful it is to experience the grace of God! Even though the flyer may not have had to provide the finances for the journey, it is still acceptable to earn credit for the flight.

Many times, the "price" paid for those invited to minister is a spiritual one. At the same time, we must not take advantage of the good will of others by then demanding first class seating, luxury vehicle transportation, and 5-Star accommodations. Some may have encountered less than ideal circumstances along the way that make this entitlement seem like a requirement. We must search our hearts and motives. There are people in the world who are suffering, sleep in huts, and walk by foot to every destination. We must be thankful for those who are able to provide for the laborers wages, but we must also be obedient to the assignment given to us, even if it means we must be responsible for the journey ourselves. Take flight!

From the Floor, Up!

Too many leaders have it backwards. Instead of desiring to serve those whom the Lord sends us, many esteem the privilege of leadership to mean that we are to be served. True dance ministry leaders often work long hours planning activities, researching, reading, preparing garments, organizing props, listening to music, counseling and encouraging dancers, maintaining families, serving the congregation, and so on. This is where many of us start... but is this where we stay?

As the Lord has elevated some dance ministry leaders, the temptation to "pass the buck" and feel as though we should be honored for our labor may creep in. While delegation is a sign of good leadership, assigning tasks based on the notion that paying our dues means that we no longer have to work can lead to major problems and division within the ministry. Expecting to be honored financially or lavished with gifts can become problematic when we reward people based on what they can give us personally.

What type of blueprint did Jesus provide? He washed the feet of His disciples in the ultimate expression of what it is to lead by example. Washing the feet of others goes beyond the natural posture of humbling ourselves and must be an integral part of our character and personality as leaders. Making a regular practice of serving and spending time with those we lead will help us remain attached as a unified Body.

As we prayerfully consider those we lead, we must never fail to begin with humility. The view from the floor allows us to find something to look up to in those who follow us. It also reminds us to consider that the feet we train to move deserve to be cared for as well. We must be willing to take off our "titles" and be clothed with humility so that we may serve the people of God in an even greater capacity. If we are not willing to decrease, we do not allow the Lord to increase in our lives and ministries.

Ministry or Mayhem?

Many who host dance conferences, lead movement ministries, or teach often talk about unity, being on one accord, and being many members of one Body. The stark reality of many groups and ministries is that this unity usually hinges on the requirement that you must join their group, cause or organization for this to occur. This is not "Kingdom" by any means.

I recently posted the following personal quote on Facebook: "Greatness is not intimidated by greatness, but rather submits in order to surpass. If those more experienced, skilled, or wise cause us to feel inferior, then we are operating in mediocrity and not excellence. Iron sharpens iron!" The general point of this is that jealously and envy cannot survive where humility is the order of the day. When we are led by the Spirit, we will have the wisdom to learn from those around us. These people do not necessarily have to be "dance ministry celebrities" or famous preachers. God can use anyone to impact our lives if our ears and eyes are open!

My friend Dr. Franca Fauntleroy chimed in and noted, "I sometimes wonder if we really operate in ministry or mayhem because Christians can be so cruel." I had to agree with this observation, and lament for many of the wounded movement ministers who have been maimed by overly-ambitious, money-hungry, fame-seeking, territory claiming, myopic wolves in sheep's clothing!

This injury is made manifest by excommunication, isolation, expulsion, blacklisting, ridicule, and malicious intent. The weapons of choice are verbal (spoken/written), social (ignoring others/intentional avoidance/animosity), technological (email/website articles/blogging/social networking), and spiritual (twisting the Word to gain an advantage/abusing the pulpit to preach our own agendas/hoping for destruction to befall the ministries of others).

Many of us have different areas of passion or concentration, but we really should have one common goal: Proclaim the Gospel and make disciples. Because many of our leaders have erroneously pushed our own agendas, we have drawn swords against one another. This is not ministry, this is mayhem!

Ministry
The office, duties, or functions of a minister

The body of ministers of religion: clergy

A person or thing through which something is accomplished :agency, instrumentality

Mayhem
Willful and permanent deprivation of a bodily member resulting in the impairment of a person's fighting ability

Willful and permanent crippling, mutilation, or disfigurement of any part of the body

Needless or willful damage or violence

Now that we have defined the difference, let us make an assessment:

When any of us inflicts damage on a fellow co-laborer, it's not ministry:

It's mayhem!

If we secretly desire the downfall of another and facilitate this by innuendo and threats for followers to disassociate with the offender:

It's mayhem!

When we encourage people to follow us instead of God:

It's mayhem!

When we operate out of impure motives and deception:

It's mayhem!

Each of us needs to examine ourselves today and repent for any actions that were provoked by the flesh and our own personal feelings. Deception has crept in and influenced even the elect among our ranks. We can pray, prophesy, and preach with the best of them, but unless we live the Word, we are facilitating mayhem and not ministry.

The Produce Section

Each of our ministries should be fruitful. Many dance ministries have experienced seasons where there seemed to be more being subtracted than is added. While some may consider this a "pruning" season, there are other times that disease and decay is the reason for the absence of fruit in the ministry. There is a difference between the two, and we must know how to discern it so the ministry is not destroyed.

Some of the things that will help your dance ministry bear fruit is determined by several factors:

Is It The Right Season?
Many churches want dance ministries just because it is popular to have one. These same facilities may have no room for dancers to go forth because of extremely limited spacing, immobile (or sacred) church furniture, low ceilings, insufficient sound systems, narrow aisles, and more. In these instances, it may be difficult for even the solo dance minister to move with ease. When we are planting, the ground must be able to accommodate the size of the tree that will produce the fruit. If not, the ground will be damaged or the fruit will be unable to grow. If we are not using wisdom and moving in the timing of the Lord, our harvest will be compromised.

Are We Cultivating an Atmosphere that is Ripe for Growth?
I cannot tell you how many dance ministries balk at the idea of frequent Bible study! My heart is heavy every time people reject the Word and choose "work" over "worship." I can gladly say that these same ministries often sing a different tune after the revelation of the Scriptures helps them to stay rooted in Christ. Each and every dancer should be able to pray, understand the Word as it relates to dance, and understand his or her function in the ministry of movement in addition to what the church or group is assigned to do in their area.

What Are We Planting and What Fruit Do We Expect?
A lack of understanding breeds destruction and infects the fruit of the ministry. If dancers come just to participate in an activity, the seed has no root. When the leaders do not recognize "weedy" behavior, it will attempt to choke the life out of the ministry. When there are arguments, lack of humility, envy, superiority, faithlessness, immaturity, and sabotage, there is evidence of disease. This can be treated with prayer, care, and Scripture-based confrontation and resolution. If we reason together, we can agree so that we can continue to minister as one.

Is the Fruit Lingering Too Long?
We must be able to move when God moves. Fruit that sits around for too long eventually stinks. People should be fed with the Word that we bring forth from our ministries. If we hoard the produce within the four walls of our churches, we can become rotten. Many churches even forbid their dance ministries from extending beyond the local church. At other times, we are happy for the current harvest and fail to realize that old fruit will become unhealthy for our bodies after a period of time. Who wants to feed off of spoiled fruit? Many of us have been doing dances out of season, holding on to relationships out of season, and failing to fortify ourselves to endure for several seasons. We must continually stay in a place where the fruit is growing, being shared, and continually being reproduced.

Where Do I Find Fruit?
The Bible is our instructional manual! When people want fresh fruit, they often visit the produce section of a local store to make the selection. If we are looking to the wrong sources (approval of others, celebrity status, wrong motives) we will not find what we are looking for. Each of us needs a personal relationship with God. If we dance in a group, leaders should be anointed for the work and reproduce Christ in others (not make clones of themselves). Clean hands will allow us to handle fruit in a healthy fashion. A Running Start

Gaining ground ahead of time will help us to remain stable in the long run. There are some dancers who wrestle with getting everything "perfect" before they make a move forward. Humans are imperfect, but the Lord is perfect. When we allow Him to lead and guide us, His will can manifest in our lives. Stepping out on faith means that we may only have one Word from the Lord, but that one word should be enough to get us moving.

Preparation in advance will sustain us over the journey. Waiting to read the Word of God until we are in a bind or failing to give ourselves sufficient time to dedicate to prayer and worship will become evident as we minister. On the natural side of things, training, reading, research, and linking with experienced people will allow the dance ministry to operate realistically and wisely. We do not have to wait to begin a work until we have all of the elements in place, but counting the cost beforehand will let us know what it takes to complete the work.

As a personal testimony, the Lord told me to start a dance company in Las Vegas several years ago. He instructed me to prepare in advance before making a call for dancers. I got on my face and prayed for 4 years, asking Him to send the dancers for the company. I wrote down the vision and wrote class descriptions. Then I waited for His signal to go forth. You could say that I was in position at the starting line. In the meanwhile, He opened doors for me to minister solo throughout Las Vegas, meeting many dancers and connecting with the community and pastors. He then let me know that it was time to start the company. I stepped out on faith and secured a dance studio, spread the word, and the dancers showed up! One year later, Reign Dance Company is over 25 strong and growing. GOD IS FAITHFUL!

Preparation starts long before we show up for the race. We can get a running start by: Reading the Word of God (not for dance specifically, but to be able to know His voice. Knowing the Word will also greatly aid in Divine choreography), writing the vision God gives, praying faithfully, taking dance classes, researching other dance ministries, reading dance ministry books, attending conferences and workshops, obtaining proper garment resources, and staying open to the Lord's instruction- just to name a few. Though we may not have all of these elements in place at the same time, when we prepare to obey in advance, we will gain ground that will allow us to endure even in difficult seasons. How we run this race matters. Let's make sure to have what we need to obtain the prize.

My Sole Has Been Anchored

The ministry of movement seems to be under constant assault. Church politics, ministry infighting, lack of understanding, impure motives, vainglory, competition, pride, and more seem to plague dancers non-stop. All we have to do is remember David. When he danced, he was criticized by his own wife (Michal). When the women sang and danced about David's victories, King Saul became jealous of him from that day on to the point that he sought David's life. Criticism and envy come with the territory. We must know how to respond so that we are not shaken when the attacks surface.

If our feet are not stable, we are likely to fall. The impact can result in little injury or even cause breakage. Remaining firmly planted in the Word of God will allow us to "keep our feet" when the shifting comes. Dance ministries who are not applying the Word of God on a regular basis will find themselves on a slippery slope. Ministers of movement who seek the positions of others or look for approval from people will discover that the same people who kiss them on the cheek may later betray them.

None of these things will move us when we are aware of our God-given assignments and keep His promises to us in front of our faces. We should not be surprised at the opposition we face, and neither should we take these things personally. When we decide to follow Christ, we should also be aware that suffering comes with this walk.

The key to standing firm is prayer, study, and clear direction from the Lord. Even when we are facing what seem to be impossible circumstances, we must proclaim that we will continue to stand even after having done all. When we have securely placed ourselves on the True Foundation, we have found an anchor for our soles that cannot be severed.

A Working Relationship

Busy schedules... A myriad of activities... Managing calendars/dancers/events.... Organizing... Projecting... Planning... A few minutes here, a few hours there, then days... weeks... months! Before we know it, we may find out that we only have a "working relationship" with God. Some of us are so busy doing what we call "kingdom business" that we end up re-enacting the Mary and Martha scenario in Luke Chapter 10. Many of us have become so immersed in doing the work that we neglect to worship the One Who makes it all possible.

When Jesus visited Mary and Martha, it is noted that Martha was distracted through much serving. How many times do we neglect to spend time in prayer because we have lengthy dance rehearsals? Are we so exhausted after dancing all weekend that we cannot seem to find the time to read the Bible frequently? Do we only worship when we are before people and neglect to offer the Lord the fruit of our lips privately? If so, we merely have a "professional relationship" with the Lord that does not extend beyond the workplace (the church building or event location).

It is wonderful to do things for the sake of the Kingdom. When we find ourselves making our assignments a priority over true fellowship with our Father, we will begin to be unable to hear from Him clearly, feel exhausted, become negligent, and fall into disobedience. It is time to repent from being ministry "workaholics" and return to our proper posture before God: WORSHIP!

Let God Do It!

Many times, we are so anxious to serve that we may fall into the trap of inviting ourselves to take a place not designated for us. The timing of the Lord is perfect! When we strive for name placement, platforms, and invitations, we are, in effect, trying to make room for our gift instead of letting our gift make room for us. When the Lord opens a door, no man can shut it!

This is not to say that we do not put forth effort to be excellent. There is nothing wrong with being prepared when a door opens. Websites, business cards, social networking pages, and up-to-date contact information are helpful when people want to contact us for an invite. Studying the Word and taking classes will pay off at the appointed time. While the networking world may urge us to hook up with as many "friends" as possible and promote our ministries like a marketing firm, many of these practices do not line up with Scripture. We must allow ourselves to be led of the Lord.

I can only testify to what the Lord has done for me. It is somewhat disturbing to receive dance ministry resumes, unsolicited requests to teach or minister, or see message boards and social networking sites flooded with "BOOK ME" "INVITE ME" "CONTACT ME" messages from ministries. Let me encourage someone by saying that I am amazed at the doors God has opened for me and His way of promotion. I have chosen not to pay for a platform to "minister" at conventions or special events. The Lord has not instructed me to search for every potential connection in cyberspace to let them know that I am available for ministry. I do not maintain connections with people on the basis of what they can do for me. I am constantly examining my own motives to make sure that I am not looking at new dance ministry contacts as potential conference invitations. So far, the Lord is doing a fantastic job!

This is not in reference to missions work or evangelism. I am addressing the platform mentality that so many seek: Comfortable accommodations, luxury travel, pictures on brochures and advertisements, name recognition, large honorariums, reserved seating, keynote distinctions... shall I continue? When the Lord allows us to be requested and celebrated by His doing, we are more likely to honor Him. If we feel as though our labor entitles us to reap these benefits, we honor and glorify ourselves.

I am writing this to encourage those who labor for the Kingdom that we do not have to force our way into any door. When we are faithful to His work, He will amaze us with His perfect plan. I have said it before, but it bears repeating: "The door that you open, you will have to keep open through your own efforts. The doors that the Lord opens requires no added assistance on our part." Let God do it!

Lessons for a Decade

I decided to embrace the ministry of movement 10 years ago. At that time in 1999, I was not sure of all of the "rules and regulations" of dance ministry, but felt an intense desire to move in Him. What is amazing is that I have always been involved in the Worship Arts, and served in church as a choir director, sang on the praise team, directed the drama department, and served as dance ministry leader. Sometimes, I tried to do all these things at once! Those were the days...

As I continued in dance ministry, more doors opened up for me in the area of teaching. I am blessed to travel and teach, and sometimes do so at my own expense. It's not about the money, but the assignment. What I have learned over the past 10 years is that there are unique challenges and benefits to the multiple facets of movement ministry. Not every movement minister is a liturgical dancer. Mime ministers and contemporary movement artists abound and have another unique set of obstacles and blessings.

Not only have I been fortunate to experience several scenarios in the dance ministry, I have also been transformed from being a praise dancer-to a worship dancer-to a prophetic dancer: All to the glory of God! I pray that these tips over the past few years will bless you as much as they have helped me...

HOW I GOT INTO THE MINISTRY OF MOVEMENT...
I did not exactly start out with the knowledge that I would become a movement minister. At the age of 15, I wrote a production for my church entitled, "The Ultimate Sacrifice." At the time I was assistant director of the choir and singing on the praise team. There were a few ladies and girls at our church who danced from time to time, so I incorporated a praise dance scene into the production.

Several years later, another church asked me to assist with the drama department for Resurrection Sunday. I again took the liberty to incorporate praise dance into the production, but this time I laced up my dancing shoes and gave it a try. I called for dancers, and seven young ladies stepped up to the challenge. We rehearsed in my apartment (yes!) and during the evening service, we joyfully danced to Tri-City Singers "When Sunday Comes." From that moment, I knew that I wanted to praise dance on a regular basis.

I asked the same girls if they wanted to continue praise dancing. Of the seven, only two of us decided to continue. As I was standing in the hallway of my apartment, the word "Envision" dropped into my spirit. I immediately called my remaining partner, and thus my official journey of dance ministry began.

THE DANCING DUO
My partner and I not only shared a passion, we shared a similar appearance. The novelty of our ministry was that we looked so much alike that no one could focus on just one of us. The challenge was that we were not looked at as individuals outside of the ministry.

Duets can also be a husband and wife team, relatives, or great friends. Dancing as a duet often requires closeness and fellowship beyond dance rehearsals. Duets should watch out for divisive people who come to separate the ministry. On the other hand, when the season for a particular type of ministry has ended, we must recognize it and move forward according to the will of God.

Tips for Duets:
-Pray together and study the Bible
-Make sure that you are in agreement with your partner
-Strive to not let one "outshine" the other. You must both be anointed!
-Ensure that song selections work for fewer numbers of people
-Avoid competing with each other

THE SOLOIST
After the duet ministry came to a close, I obeyed the Lord's leading and began to dance solo. At first, I was not sure that I could do it after having been a duet for 4 years. The lessons that I learned were valuable.

The most challenging aspect of the solo is to develop a story or message with only one person. Divine creativity is needed indeed! As a group/duo, I was able to "see" the choreography on someone else to know what worked or not. As a soloist, my comfort zone was gone and I had to completely rely on the Lord for confirmation.

When dancing alone, it is important to have a good support system. For females, venturing out alone may take some extra "forward-thinking" in order to stay focused and safe! Often, I would take a trusted, praying friend along with me when I went out to minister. If a friend was not available, I would usually make sure that I knew someone at the location that could assist me when needed.

One of the pitfalls of soloists is maintaining a dedicated rehearsal time. It is easy to put things off until later... tomorrow... a few days from now... and then "Oh, no! I have to dance tomorrow!" Staying faithful pays off in the end. Although no one may know you are "winging it," the experienced dancer or discerning person will be able to pick up on it.

Tips for Soloists:
-Don't always rely on a formula (flags, props, etc.) for a quick fix
-Make sure that someone knows where you are ministering, and take a partner if possible
-Avoid waiting until the last minute to put pieces together
-Never assume anything, ask questions until you have the answers you need

THE DANCE GROUP
This applies to groups of 3 or more people that are not necessarily from the same church. This can be even more challenging for groups with both males and females. Getting an understanding early will help maintain unity.

It is a good idea to make sure that everyone agrees that Jesus is Lord. Another item to consider is dressing room space. When attending concerts and larger events, it may be a challenge to get dressed and remain modest when in mixed company. When journeying over distances, trying to carpool or caravan may help build unity and assist with preparation before arriving to the location. When this is not possible, establishing a prayer focus and listening to the music to be ministered may keep everyone on one accord.

Tips for Groups:
-Determine beforehand what the plan of action will be for attire
-Plan your travel route for safety and on-time group arrival
-Keep the lines of communication open
-Make sure to have a "point person" or leader for music and business matters

And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart

THE CHURCH DANCE MINISTRY
Yes, church protocol applies here! As a church dance group, there may be more restrictions as to what is or is not permissable. Ministering before the congregation as a church dance ministry means that the members or group should come in line with the teaching of the church. We must also consider to whom we are ministering. For instance, if the congregation is mostly made up of senior citizens, it may not be a good idea to dance in jeans and t-shirts to a heavy beat-laden song.

The criteria for joining a church dance ministry may include becoming a member, attending Bible study, being a tither or giver, etc. Some churches have an open door policy, while others have auditions. Usually a dance ministry leader organizes the ministry, but sometimes a parent or musician will provide oversight.

Tips for Church Ministries:
-Align with the vision and message of your local congregation
-Obtain permission before attending outside engagements on behalf of the church
-Ask the Pastor what his or her vision is for the church dance ministry
-Encourage every member to have a personal relationship with the Lord

THE COMMUNITY DANCE MINISTRY
Similar to the group model, this type of ministry usually has several participants. A community dance ministry may often dance "outside of the four walls" for outreach events and concerts. These dancers usually belong to several different churches. The rehearsal location may be a church, dance studio, community center, or even a garage!

The communty dance ministry is not a replacement for the church dance ministry. Although some church situations may prevent dancers from participating, we must make sure that rebellious thinking is not the reason for linking with the community. There is a need to ask some questions to determine what the motives of the dancers are. This is not to say that all community dancers must participate in the church dance ministry (if they have one), but is a way to ensure that all hearts and minds are in the right place.

Tips for Community Ministries:
-Define the vision of the ministry that aligns with God's Word
-Establish general criteria for community participation
-Select a name that is appropriate to the vision and types of people represented
-Keep members informed through clear comunication, newsletters, emails, phone calls, etc.

To declare the name of the LORD in Zion, and His praise in Jerusalem, when the peoples are gathered together, and the kingdoms, to serve the LORD.

THE DANCE MINISTRY OVERSEER
This person may not necessarily be a dancer, but may serve as a Minister of Music or Worship Arts Director at church. At times, this can even be the Pastor. The dance ministry leader usually reports to this person and obtains approval to minister both inside and outside of the church.

It is important that the person who oversees the dancers has an understanding of the ministry. Too often, the dance ministry is neglected or has unrealistic expectations placed upon them when the overseer is unsympathetic concerning dance. Often, this person has an understanding of worship in general, but there is a need to be aware of how dance fits into the congregational model. A controlling personality may hinder the progress of those under this type of leadership, so much prayer is needed to lead without dictating.

Tips for Dance Ministry Overeers:
-Become educated in the ministry of movement through personal Bible study and books
-Select a leader that is qualified to run the dance ministry (this may not necessarily be the "best" dancer on the team)
-Assist in guiding the ministry to align with church beliefs and attire protocol
-Give the ministry space to be "imperfect" while encouraging excellence and growth

Acts 20:28
Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.

REFLECTIONS
In the ministry of movement, I have served in all of the above positions. I praise the Lord for the privilege of dancing before Him. Sometimes this journey has included pain, loss, sadness, grief, and agony; however, the joy inexpressible, miraculous moments, liberty, deliverance, and edification it has brought to the church far exceeds the struggle. As the Lord continues to move me forward in ministry, I understand that my tenure in the ministry of movement may be seasonal. In the meantime, I will continue to dance before the Lord with all my might!

It's a good practice to give credit where it is due. It is also helpful to know the Word of God concerning the pieces that we minister and being able to apply truth accurately. Neglecting to take the time to gather information can make us look ignorant, or in the most extreme sense, land us in trouble (with others or even the courts!)

The Bible
There are still too many praise dancers and movement ministers who do not have a basic understanding of the Scriptures concerning dance, and are even less studious concerning the Word of God in general. In my experience, reading the Bible on a regular basis allows the Word to come alive during rehearsals and ministry opportunities. What's on the inside comes out! It's amazing to me how a dance move can become "alive" to a group when Biblical application is clear. Choreography itself may not be spiritual, but when we make the connection through the Word, people are able to witness a mighty move of the Spirit.

We should take the time to make sure that every song we minister "rightly divides the word of truth" by comparing it with Scripture. When we study the Bible regularly, we do not have to rely on internet search engines to produce the Scripture references for us! We will instead know which words we are looking for to find the correct application of Scripture.

Not only should we be knowledgeable, we should make sure that each dancer is able to articulate meaning for themselves. Often, dance ministry leaders spend time researching and teaching, but may not empower other dance team members to know the Word personally. It is indeed awesome to witness an entire dance ministry operating in the power of the Spirit and understanding of the Word, instead of focusing on the few in ministry who "shine."

Songs and Artists
Because many are ministered to through the songs we use, it is important to be able to share with them the name of the artist or group, title of the song, and the album that the song can be found on, if possible. Why does this matter? Giving away burned copies of the CD single only helps one person (and may hurt the proceeds of the artist). Many times I have been able to share this information and was later informed by the same people that they purchased the CD and were blessed by it. Obtaining the CD for themselves allowed the ministry to continue beyond the initial minutes of the piece!

Colossians 3:16
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Kudos and Credits
The Lord is the Ultimate Movement Creator. He imparts instructions through vessels that include us. Although we do not serve for accolades, it is important to thank people and appreciate them for their service unto others.

If we use choreography from someone else, we should obtain permission first. If we have been inspired by someone else, we should say so. When we are blessed by teaching that we received from a conference or workshop, we should be mindful to correctly quote and refer to others whose insight we may use to share with others.

Songwriters must properly obtain permission when using samples or words from other artists. Writing requires that we properly cite the sources we may have used. Even photographers are credited with the images they capture in the media. Why is this important? It limits the offense that can take place between us, keeps us accountable, and hinders us from being deceptive in any way. Let's keep our hands clean!

No Means Yes and Yes Means No

Sometimes along our ministry journey, we have to make decisions that will determine promotion, no motion, or moving in reverse. There are many who seek to travel the world, dance on national platforms and be celebrated without making the choice to follow God wholeheartedly. The truth of the matter is, there are some things we must say "No" to in order to say "Yes" to God... and sometimes our "Yes" to God means that we have to say "No" to our own desires.

Are we willing to compromise in order to gain a platform?

Are we using others as a means to an end to make connections that we believe will get us further in ministry?

Do we seek out relationships with "powerful" dance ministers in order to get ministry invitations and special favor?

Are we joining large churches with large dance ministries in order to be seen on television or by thousands?

Have we remained friends or associates with people or joined organizations just because we want to be invited back to an event at which we once had the opportunity to minister?

It is important to let God have His perfect way! How many of us will admit that we have desired good things in our hearts that we consider "Kingdom" but never took the time to see if it was His will or assignment specifically for us? Many plan ministry conferences, concerts, and gatherings with good intentions that may not have been ordered by Him. This is not determined by perceived failure or success from the outside eye. The Holy Spirit is a Revealer and we must allow Him to show us Truth.

On the other hand, how many of us are saying "Yes" to opportunities just because they sound good? Have we gotten excited about dancing at a large church or teaching at a popular conference because of the potential exposure gained? (I confess that I have done both in the past and have been greatly disappointed). Through it all, I have learned to desire what the Lord has appointed for me. Some of those assignments are large, and some seemingly small, but it is obedience that makes the difference.

Let's take inventory of all of the current assignments and calendar items that are ahead of us. Have we said "yes" to something when we should have declined? Did we say "no" to an opportunity because we have been overwhelmed by some of the tasks we should have let go of long ago? It's time to do the will of the Father and agree with His decree. Saying "No" to sin and disobedience at all costs means saying "Yes" to God. Submitting a "Yes" to His will means saying "No" to anything that will hinder us from pressing toward the mark.

Responding correctly will save us lots of pain and heartache in ministry and life. We must not let our mouths get us into trouble. We must mean what we say and say what we mean- but we should first check with the Lord! Our "Yes" to Him is not determined by what we say with our lips, but by what we obey in response to His word concerning our lives.

As I was driving in my car today, the words "Teacher's Edition" dropped into my spirit. Do you remember having had a chance to glance at the Teacher's Edition of a textbook in school? What was wonderful about the Teacher's Edition is that not only did it have the information given to the students, it contained the answers to questions asked!

What a challenge it is today to be a dance ministry leader! When someone accepts the challenge to lead, it is pertinent that we also have access to the right information and the answers needed to efficiently teach people. How many dance ministries are suffering today at the hands of ill-equipped leaders? More than we'd like to admit...

If given the opportunity to serve, leaders must not rely on someone else to provide the roadmap we need. We must each seek to know how to lead the ministry according to the Word. It is also practical to obtain experienced wisdom, but we must remember that what may work for one ministry may not exactly fit our circumstances.

In order to assemble the "Teacher's Edition" for dance ministers, we must include the following contents:

1) Charting the Course: Instructions

Provide clarity to your dance ministry team by providing clear communication (calendars, checklists, contact information). This can be done via email, through text messages, on paper, through online notification systems, or through all of the above. As it is often said, "Sharing is caring."

Is your ministry aware of requirements and upcoming dates far enough in advance to plan properly?

Are there general guidelines regarding ministry qualifications, expectations, appearance standards, conduct, garment requirements, etc?

Having a roadmap in place will minimize confusion, but not having one will guarantee roadblocks!

2) Lesson Plan: Information for the Student

Develop lesson plans to guide the ministry toward progress. For example, structured team studies will help the ministry be on one accord when studying the Biblical foundations of movement as a ministry (book readings, specialized workshops, directed group studies, research topics, etc).

Draft a plan to complete choreography before deadlines to assist us in knowing if we are using our time effectively or need to make adjustments (Are we projecting accurate completion times? Are we missing scheduled ministry engagements because we did not have time to complete the piece? Have we mastered the necessary technique needed to hasten the choreographic process?).

Forecast activities for the year and then establish regular checkpoints to see if adjustments need to be made (technique application, planned conference attendance, membership growth, etc).

3) Questions and Answers
Leaders should be more knowledgeable than the people we lead in our area of expertise. When a dance ministry leader has not studied or properly applied themselves to excellence, it will reflect on the ministry. Although the leader may not develop all of the choreography and select all of the garments, he or she should not be ignorant concerning these areas.

Pleading ignorance does not work for leaders! Each leader should make it a priority to become the "resident expert" and be able to provide accurate information to the team. (How embarrassing is it when dance ministry leaders are not able to provide Biblical references to dance beyond David? We've got to do better!)

4) Staff Development: Publisher's Notes
The Bible reminds us to know those that labor among us. Not only should we study dance ministry from a Biblical perspective, researching the progress being made by others today will help us to avoid "reinventing the wheel." Learning about other dance ministry leaders can both inspire us as well as teach us valuable lessons in what not to do.

In addition, we should take steps to get to know those we minister with, so that we may know how to pray and provide guidance unique to the people we lead. Exercising discernment will reveal to us if a situation is a behavioral problem or a spiritual one...

5) Giving Honor: Acknowledgments
It does not cost us much to be appreciative. Too many times, those who labor in ministry are encouraged to do a thankless job. Let not that be said of us. Dancers need to know that leaders are servants too! Taking the time to announce praise reports, birthdays, anniversaries, and other milestones will make people feel appreciated and unified.

Beyond the movement ministry, we must show gratitide to our Pastors, supporting ministries, families, mentors, and other people who make what we do possible. In the forefront of all of this, we must not fail to give thanks to the LORD for making what we do possible!

Not only should we seek to be disciples, but we should be able to impart in a way that brings glory to God. We cannot take the mandate to teach lightly-- We MUST practice what we preach! Teaching others in the arts can be a challenge, but one that we can successfully navigate if we have the right reference guide: The BIBLE!

Critical Condition

The dance ministry is in need of emergency assistance! The call to repentance is now! Movement ministers that once operated in liberty are now in bondage at the hands of our own. For many, the limits that we once faced were attributed to a church culture that did not understand the arts as having a place in the traditional setting. As the doors have opened to the creative arts, we are now faced with oppression within our own ranks.

Speculation, accusation, disenfranchisement, separation, offense, pride, self-promotion, envy, bitterness, hatred, unforgiveness, misunderstanding, ignorance, and greed have magnified in the worship arts over the last few years. This has not been limited to the local dance ministries, but has risen through the ranks on a national and international level. When will we turn from our ways and be healed, dance ministers?

If we are honest with ourselves, we know that there are some things that the Holy Spirit has brought to our attention that needs to be corrected. Whether we receive a word in our spirits, through a prophet, or through another person, we have been warned that it is time for us to address our behavior. We cannot walk in self-righteousness and expect goodness in return. Our disobedience regarding walking in love will result in our own demise.

For my critics, I praise God. Why? Either I will have to face the truth or thank God for reminding me to stay on my face before Him. Instead of getting defensive, I pray and ask the Lord to reveal to me if any of it is true. If it is, I then ask for Him to deliver me from anything in me that is not reflective of Him. (I am still a work in progress!) If it is not true, I know that His word concerning me will prevail and that my accusers will have to deal with their own souls. We sink into danger when we automatically perceive every criticism as an attack from the enemy. The Lord chastens those He loves, according to the Word (Hebrews 12:6).

If we consider others more than ourselves, our actions will continue to line up with the Word of God. When we become the center of attraction in our dance ministries, we can expect division to multiply. My heart aches at the pains that the dance ministries are facing in this hour. I can testify that I have experienced hurt and disappointment at the hands of others in this ministry, but continue to pray that the Repairer of the Breach restores that which has been damaged. I cannot allow myself to be guilty of the same abuses as an excuse for bad behavior.

Is there anything that we know we need to repent for concerning our behavior towards others in the dance ministry?

Have we cut off relationships with other dancers because of separation from other leaders and organizations?

Are we choosing sides in arguments based on likes/dislikes instead of praying?

Have our words through social networking sites, blogs, newsletters, and personal appearances caused irreparable harm?

Is there someone we need to reach out to and ask for forgiveness, even if we think that it will not be received?

Let us have clean hands and pure hearts! Let us return to a place where we only minister and do all to the glory of God! Lord have mercy on us, and revive us again!

TOPIC: Contracted Ministry

I have several areas that I would like to address, according to the Word of God:

1- In all your getting, get understanding (Proverbs 4:7).

Why a “contract?” Isn’t the purpose of a contract to have legal recourse?

Contract: In law, a contract is a binding legal agreement that is enforceable in a court of law. That is to say, a contract is an exchange of promises for the breach of which the law will provide a remedy. (Source: Wikipedia)

We understand the importance of having an agreement (understanding) in writing, but formulating a contract can become an area of contention. We may want to justify dance ministry as our occupation, but at this point, we need to determine if preaching and dancing the Gospel is a “job” to us or a commission from the Lord.

Do not go hastily to court; For what will you do in the end, When your neighbor has put you to shame?

But you have dishonored the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you and drag you into the courts?

***Personally, I receive a letter of invitation to know what to expect. Usually, these items are provided, but if not, I move on and it is forgiven; however, I may hesitate to deal with that ministry in the future.

2- What exactly are we charging for?

Are we charging for the Gospel? Are we charging for our time? Are we charging for our experience? We should be led by the Word and by the Lord. Let’s look at Paul’s take on this:

1 Corinthians 9:18
What is my reward then? That when I preach the gospel, I may present the gospel of Christ without charge, that I may not abuse my authority in the gospel.

2 Corinthians 11:7
Did I commit sin in humbling myself that you might be exalted, because I preached the gospel of God to you free of charge?

What context are we being asked to come in? Could Paul have charged? Certainly, but to keep himself pure (cannot serve God and mammon), he opted not to. How many of us have seen ministries corrupted by the love of money?

I too travel frequently and am blessed to receive accommodations, travel and love offerings. I am also blessed when I do not receive travel, lodging, or finances. The reward will be awaiting me in eternity. I am not suffering lack and rejoice in the many testimonies of the people who the Lord sends me to serve.

I believe that the difference is being aware of the circumstances up front. I personally do not ever want money to be a factor in my acceptance of an assignment. There are conferences that I have attended in which I have paid for the entire trip and received no money. Personally, the Lord has not instructed me to charge for ministry, but gave me a way to return with additional income through a vendor table for dance ministry goods. If I feel that a conference host is taking advantage of instructors, it is my choice whether or not I will continue to participate.

3- FULL TIME?

Some may say, “This is what I do full time.”

***Food for thought: If we are not making enough money doing ministry, then should we look for a job (or business) to support our living expenses?

We should all be in full-time ministry as a life calling. Agreed, if we labor in the Gospel, we should live from it. The issue is that many of us have not reached the point where we are solely laboring in the Word to meet our financial needs. (Yes, I do “this” full-time, but the Lord opened the door for me to be able to do this exclusively— in His timing).

***More Food for Thought: Are we expecting our needs to be met or our wants too?

For example, I am blessed to run a praise dance company and I pay my technique instructor to show up on time twice per week and teach a progressive modern dance curriculum. She is not paid to show up and dance with us at ministry outings. She is not paid to attend Word classes. I am asking her to dedicate her time on a regular basis and be available to cover for me when I am out of town. But guess what the blessing is? She allows me to pay her whatever the Lord placed on my heart. Because I consulted Him, she is paid standard scale for dance instructors. (I also believe that by the same measure we sow, we reap. When we take care of people, God will take care of us).

It is up to us to treat one another well. Should we make demands for our service? Have we reached a level where we must be comfortable and happy to minister the Word of God? (WOW- How did Paul do it from jail?) Again, let the Word and the Holy Spirit guide. A few parting Scriptures for thought:

[Honor the Elders] Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine.

1 Thessalonians 2:8-9
“So, affectionately longing for you, we were well pleased to impart to you not only the gospel of God, but also our own lives, because you had become dear to us. For you remember, brethren, our labor and toil; for laboring night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, we preached to you the gospel of God.”

Idol Eyes

When we have a voice that influences people, we must prayerfully guard what we say. People are often looking for a leader, mentor, or other inspiration to get closer to the goal. In the dance ministry realm, the need for personal leadership seems to have taken on a life of its own...

For some reason, a growing population of dancers do not feel as though their own Pastors or churches are equipped enough to provide them with needed training. In many senses, this analysis may hold some truth, but we must not allow pride to enter in. God is raising up "specialists" who are studied in the worship arts and can provide some much-needed guidance in many areas. This does not give us the right to disregard the leadership that He has already provided.

The hidden danger lies in the fact that there is a growing belief of inferiority and a need to be validated by others in movement ministry. How do I know this? I look at the growing advertisements for ministry training and licensing/ordination programs, dance competitions that seek to highlight the "best" in the praise dance genre, churches clamoring for dance ministry presence even when it is clear that the people are not ready, and the explosion of groups hosting dance conferences! Some would argue that this is a good thing, but it is not benefitting the Kingdom if the motive behind it is wrong. Thus, many sheep are being wounded and misled.

We must fix our eyes on the Lord. When we trust Him to provide us with relationships that will develop our gifts and talents, we can testify to the fruitfulness of it. What God has joined together should not be tampered with by man.

If we are not watchful, we can begin to idolize the dance ministers that we feel have "made it" in some way. This includes published authors, conference hosts and facilitators, television personalities, dance ministry leaders, marketplace ministers, and more. The danger in pursuing relationships with others based on a need for personal validation is that we can develop selfish reasons for wanting to connect with them.

If we are led by our emotions, we may discover ourselves bending over backwards to accommodate outrageous requests, develop man-pleasing habits in serving, or praising our "idols" more than we give glory to God. We cannot simply blame those who abuse the mentor-mentee relationship. As it is often said: "It takes two..."

For those of us who are in leadership, we must not allow ourselves to revel in the praise, gifts, accolades, or status that comes with having influence in ministry. Remaining humble before the Lord will compel us to point others to Him. Allowing for even a moment of "look at me," can be our downfall.

If we are called to mentor, remember that it is the image of Christ that people are being transformed into. Those called to lead must not do so with dollar signs in our eyes. On both sides of the fence, keeping Jesus as our focus will combat the idolization of creation. When we longingly look for a "savior" to lead us to life in the movement ministry, we may find ourselves with "idol eyes."

We must admit, if we allow people and circumstances to hinder us, we will become toxic in ministry. The ministry of movement has made great strides in the areas of education, technical training, and greater inclusion in the general church assembly. With the increased opportunity that has presented itself, a very poisonous undercurrent can displace us if we are not watchful.

Opportunism is running rampant. Dancers are clamoring for status and relativity through academic accomplishments, endorsements, and busy travel schedules. While we may celebrate the strides that we have gained in these areas, we must remain humble in order to not let these elements be the driving force behind what we do.

Many have become mercenary in the pursuit of money over ministry in dance. Are people really determining what engagements they will accept based on paychecks, upscale accommodations and networking opportunities? The sad, but true answer is, "Yes." Though a servant is worthy of his wages, the great commission was never based on comfort. Ask Paul...

Am I more anointed than you because I have danced longer? Are you more qualified than me because you have a title? Is belonging to an organization the determining factor for us to be able to minister the Gospel worldwide through movement? Lord, deliver us from this yoke of bondage we have created for ourselves!

Dance Ministry Myths- Part 2

As we continue delving into many dance ministry myths, the purpose of this series is to liberate us from religious bondage. We are not all created to function in the same way, so why should we all look the same, dance the same, use the same music, and become as traditional as the antiquated concepts we fight?

Today, I'd like to examine dance ministry myths at the local church level:

Does every church need to have a dance ministry?
Apparently, we have been adhering to the "turn to your neighbor" philosophy! Just because the church next door has a dance ministry does not mean that every church must have a movement group. Here's the problem: If we start a dance ministry in the local assembly just for the sake of having one, we may select a dance ministry leader who is not equipped for the task. When a group of dancers begin to operate without direction, then the things that banned dance ministry from the church historically may have us relegated to the sidelines again. Church leaders must realize that to everything there is a season, and just because dance ministry seems like a great and popular activity does not mean that it's time to start one just yet.

Bottom Line: Dance ministry is not a requirement for every church, but should be an option.

Isn't Dance Ministry Just for Youth and Young Adults?
It amazes me how many churches still categorize the movement ministries under the "Youth Department." Was Miriam a child when she led the women with the timbrel and danced? Did King David's dance happen in his teen years? As a matter of fact, when Miriam danced, ALL the women followed after her. WOMEN! We must begin to embrace the ministry of dance as having no age or gender limits. The Word reminds us in Psalm 149:3 to "Let them praise His name with the dance!"

Bottom Line: Dance belongs in the church, is open to all, and brings glory to God!

It Seems That There is Such a Limited Selection of Dance Garments!
ALERT: Dance garments are not in the Bible! The Bible does describe the garments of ministry for the priesthood, but we must realize that we must worship Him in Spirit and in Truth! Not all dances are "priestly" dances. I personally love beautiful garments, but over the years have discovered that certain garments may not work for the message. We do not wear costumes, but are to demonstrate the truth of the relationship or circumstance being shown through the use of the garments.

We are not limited by the garments presented to us in catalogues marketed to the masses. We may have an anointed seamstress or tailor in our midst who may be willing to provide what we need. We do not have to copy what everyone else wears at national and international dance conferences, but we must understand that modesty and forethought are key components as we go before the congregation. What we do not have (or do not understand), we need to pray about.

Bottom Line: We must consult the Lord concerning His pattern for our garment needs.

Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

Shouldn't My Church Pay for All of My Dance Ministry Needs?
This would be nice, but the truth is that many churches simply do not have a budget for the dance ministry. This usually means that we are each responsible for purchasing ministry garments, paying for travel, financing dance classes, etc. We must take personal responsibility for our growth in ministry.

Planning in advance for purchases will help to ease some of the financial burden for the group. Fundraising may provide assistance for ministry needs, but we must first verify if the church is in agreement with our fundraising efforts, and that the products or cause behind the fundraiser do not compromise the Gospel message or ministry in any way. If the church is able to bless us financially, then we should express our appreciation by showing demonstrated growth in the ministry.

Bottom Line: The Lord is our Provider.

How much better to get wisdom than gold! And to get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.

Shouldn't We Be Allowed to Dance Whenever We Want In Our Local Church?
It is better to be invited to dance then to be told to take our seats. While we may have liberty, everyone may not be in that place as of yet. For years, dancers have complained abou being "Christmas, Mother's Day, and Easter" dancers. The Lord will show us favor at His appointed time. We must also be honest enough to know if the ministry has demonstrated enough excellence to go forth on a regular basis.

Some churches frequently support the movement ministry operating each Sunday through Praise and Worship dance! While it can be an awesome sight to see all of the arts ministries coming together, we must not pressure our local church to accommodate something for which it is not ready. If our church has granted us this liberty and we visit another church, we must not assume that the same grace applies. As difficult as it may be for us to stay in our seats, it is better to obey.

Bottom Line: You'd better ask somebody!

There are still many more myths to debunk! We must earnestly seek the Lord concerning every step we take. What works for us may not apply to someone else's ministry or local church. Let's walk in liberty!

About My Father's Business- Part 1

I have been inspired and encouraged to write a series by a few of my ministry friends, so I would like to start with an underdeveloped area of dance ministry: Business Administration. I would prefer to call this series "Wisdom for Dancers" as I see a lack of it for so many of us. This subject is not only for those who host conferences or lead dance ministries, but for everyone who would like to operate at a higher level of excellence. Great tips, preparation, and practical advice can save us lots of money and heartache down the road.

Today I will cover some basics, and will add as the series progresses...

Dance Ministry Name
Our name speaks to our personality, character, and function. There are several examples in the Bible where people are given names or renamed according to his or her purpose in life: (Abram to Abraham / Sarai to Sarah). At other times, a completely new name may have been given as conversion took place (Saul to Paul).

In our dance and movement ministries, our names should speak to the assignment to which the Lord called us. If we find ourselves with a name that may be trendy (Ex: DIVAS of Praise) or a product of our own invention, we may have to pray that the Lord reveal to us His intended name for the ministry. (For the record, I do not know a group named "DIVAS of Praise," and only used this example for clarity.)

Groups that are named after a local church may find themselves only dancing inside of that church when viewed prophetically. There is nothing wrong with functioning within our assigned areas, but if we are to go into all the world with the gospel, wouldn't it make sense not to have names that limit us to one location? Naming a dance ministry that belongs to a church body in no way takes away from the relationship to the congregation. We must remember that we a part of a larger Body.

We do not have to search the internet to find a mission and vision statement to "borrow" from another ministry. We should know our basic ministry purpose, who we are called to serve, how we are to function, and why we are doing it through dance. If we understand that the basic purpose of this is to record our God-given mission and mandate, we can use this as a guideline to stay on target. We are each uniquely called to meet specific needs. If we find ourselves veering away from the goal, we need to take the necessary steps to get back in line.

Dance Ministry Logo
This should directly relate to the ministry name and vision. The Word is full of visual imagery and symbolism. Our logo should be a good indicator of what people can expect from our ministries. Colors, symbols, font, and overall placement are all important factors to consider. Clip art may not be enough to portray an accurate picture of what the Lord wants to reveal through us.

A great Graphic Designer can assist with this process, but I have found that it's better to work with one who is also a spirit-filled believer. Prayer and a clear vision must be a key component in this process. Let's not feel inadequate, it's better to have something than nothing at all, but when we know better, we should do better.

Dance Ministry Online Presence
There are multiple ways to present ourselves online including websites, social networking sites, blogging sites, and more. I will get into specifics later, but want to highlight the importance of the image that we project to the public. If we are living a lifestyle that reflects Christian principles, it may not be as difficult to censor ourselves online.

If we post comments and pictures that would make people question our stand as it relates to the Gospel, we may need to think before placing these things in public for the world to view. What may seem like freedom to us may backfire as we see our ministries lose momentum due to foolishness on our part. Our liberty should not cause others to stumble. It's amazing to me to see how many people in ministry do not have a grasp on how the enemy can use what we write and expose to our own demise.

When we consider the plans of the Lord for our lives, we will open ourselves up to be instructed in His ways. While we may be creative, wisdom will teach us how to properly handle what the Lord gives us. As we continue to be about His business, we will talk about more areas that will help us do His will, and not our own.

Dance Ministry Myths

We must make sure that we are not so steeped in tradition and "catch phrases" that we fail to worship in truth. Many times I have spoken about throwing away the "dance ministry handbook" and choosing to follow God. This does not mean that we do not have operating standards and a written code of conduct for our ministries. I am encouraging all of us to be open to the Lord's leading, even if someone has tried to convince us otherwise.

Many of the misconceptions in the movement ministry could be resolved with a simple Bible study. I am still alarmed by the amount of dancers all over the world who have very little knowledge of who danced in the Bible, much less a basic understanding of their function in the Body. I am grateful to have the opportunity to pour into the lives of many, but also reminded that it not my assignment to keep people in bondage through the "rules."

Here are a few recurring dance ministry "myths" that I have encountered over the years:

Did David really dance out of his clothes?
How many times have we heard this from the pulpit? The concept that many seem to embrace is that David was naked or almost nude when he danced before the Lord with all his might. Let's look at what the Scripture actually says in 2 Samuel 6:14: Then David danced before the LORD with all his might; and David was wearing a linen ephod. The concept that he "uncovered himself" came from the same person who mocked him in the window- his wife! 2 Samuel 6:20 records, "Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, “How glorious was the king of Israel today, uncovering himself today in the eyes of the maids of his servants, as one of the base fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!” Kings traditionally wore royal garments, but if we want to accept him as nude, then we would also have to accept her opinion of him.

Bottom line: The Bible does not actually say that David danced out of his clothes... He was wearing something!

Is wearing jewelry, make-up, nail polish, etc, banned in dance ministry?
The Word is rich with symbolism and meaning. When we are wearing anything for ministry purposes, we must understand its significance.

Jewelry
Brides and bridegrooms adorned themselves for weddings. (Isaiah 61:10) Rings and necklaces were often given as a sign of honor by the king. (Genesis 41:42) Wearing jewelry itself is not a sin, but we must remember safety when doing so while dancing. Some cultures may have a problem with men wearing earrings in the church. Let's not be a stumblingblock, where possible.

Bottom line: If we are wearing jewelry merely to impress others, then we already know that we have the wrong intentions...

Make-Up and Nail Polish
This too can be more of a traditional preference or modern liberty. Wearing heavy make-up and dancing in white may yield interesting results... Some dance pieces may call for specific characterization with make-up to assist with the meaning of the piece. Too much enhancement may be a distraction as well. Vivid nail polish and fancy artwork may be a potential distraction in a ministry piece.

Bottom line: Let's walk in humility and wisdom...

It's not sound doctrine to criticize others for beautification efforts, but we must exercise wisdom and consult the Lord for ourselves and our ministries. If we are in a ministry that does not embrace wearing jewelry, make-up, or nail polish, we must follow suit to be on one accord.

Is it a requirement to have a dance ministry license or professional training to join the dance ministry?
Show me a license to dance in the Bible! It is amazing how knowledge can puff us up. While education and dance technique can greatly increase our ability to be able to teach and be more effective, God will use whomever He chooses!

Must I wear elaborate garments to dance?
Every movement piece does not require extravagant garments; however, we must read the Word concerning proper attire before the people. When we are open to hearing the voice of the Lord, we may be surprised at some of the unconventional ideas He will give us!

There are many more myths that we can cover, but the misinformation that so many dancers have is astounding. For dance ministry educators: Let's make sure that we are teaching according to the Bible, and not our own opinions. We do the Body a disservice when we use our influence to promote our preferences over teaching people to obey the Lord. Let no one mislead us: God is in control!

Applause is not enough. Compliments mean very little. Popularity fades. When we operate as dancers demonstrating the Word, are we witnessing signs and wonders on a frequent basis? If we believe, then signs should follow us!

Not all of us will have the same effect on people, and we should not try to duplicate the power that we witness through the ministry of others. The Lord will uniquely anoint each one of us both as individuals and as groups to impact people however He sees fit. If we see a dancer lay hands on people, that does not mean that we must do it in the same way. Just because someone is effective with flags and billows does not grant us the same gifting. When we obey the voice of the Lord, we will discover where we are most effective.

We are a continual work in progress. Some of us may not be spiritually ready for demonic activity to surface in response to our dance. If we are prepared, we will know how to properly respond in such cases. Studying the Scriptures and receiving sound doctrine will equip us for the work ahead.

Some of the signs that can manifest during and after ministry can include healing, angelic presence, demonic manifestation, weeping, worship, repentance, people coming to the altar, prophetic song/Word/dance, etc. Whatever happens, we must be ready to take the necessary steps.

If we are not experiencing supernatural power through our ministries, we must not covet the ministries of others who do. Humble prayer, study, and obedience to God's Word will be characteristic in the life of a beleiver. Calling ourselves praise dancers, liturgical dancers, mimes, worship dancers, crumpers, contemporary movement artists, or other titles do not endow us with power. It is the Lord's doing, and we must avail ourselves to be used of Him.

When we are over-anxious for an opportunity, we may fail to pray to the Lord for His direction. So many dance ministers today are eager for an opportunity and will say "yes" to every invitation. When we are confident in our assignment in the Body, we will trust the Lord to guide our every step.

Affiliations, networks, organizations, groups, clubs, and the like may be great places to be enriched in resources and information concerning the ministry of movement. Desiring to belong to a program, organization, group must be decided with the correct intentions, or we are destined for disappointment. As painful as it may seem, some not-so-Godly connections may give us wisdom in making better choices down the road.

Many people desire mentoring in the worship arts, and this is noble. The problem lies in that many who may not be called to mentor others may see a financial opportunity in becoming a guru to the masses. When we are misaligned concerning who has influence in our lives, we may find ourselves broken, wounded, tormented, and confused in the end. Just become someone is popular in a field does not mean that they have ability to lead us.

Here are questions to consider before choosing a mentor:

1- Does the ministry seem to evolve entirely around him or her in spoken messages, websites, pictures, or other published materials?

2- Are you selecting the person based on perceived popularity?

3- Do you feel like an outsider or sense an elitist behavior from the leader or within the organization he or she governs?

4- Do you feel as though (or have you been told that) you must have a dance ministry license or special ordination in order to be considered legitimate in the dance ministry realm?

5- Do you believe that connecting with certain leaders will give you more credibility?

If we are not aware of the traps that exist to hinder us, we may discover that some leaders appear to be powerful in public, but are a disaster in private. We must pray to the Lord for the ability to distinguish the good fruit from the bad. We must stay connected to the Tree of Life, and we must know that this is the prerequisite for uniting ourselves with other righteous leaders.

When the Lord links us with the right leaders to pour into our lives, we will experience the benefits of such a relationship. Forging a relationship with the intentions of gaining notoriety for ourselves may be an issue concerning our hearts. Before we can connect with anyone, we must be sure to be connected to the One that is able to lead, guide, promote, and develop us in His perfect will.

The Word tells us in Ecclesiastes 1:9 that there is nothing new under the sun. God has created all things. He inspired the writers of the Scriptures to record the history, prophecy, and poetry that was God-given. We share the Word of God with the world and quote from it liberally.

In dance and movement ministry, ignorance does not absolve us from following the laws of the land. Choreography, music, writings, published works, images, and a host of other "intellectual property" may be protected under the law. We cannot liberally take from protected works without giving the proper credit. Let's look at a couple of scenarios for clarity:

Choreography and Dance
Ballet, Modern, African, and other dance disciplines involve technical elements that are widely accepted. Even with technical training, Graham, Horton, Ailey, and other renowned choreographers are often given credit for their contributions to the art form. As movement ministers, we share many elements of dance and movement that can be considered "public domain," but if we take an entire section of choreography from someone and apply it without permission, we are in essence stealing it.

When we receive instructions from the Lord in regards to movement, He will give us creativity and movement beyond our imaginations! This choreography may or may not include the technical elements of dance. He may instruct us to use props, flags, billows, streamers, etc, or not. Our steps are indeed ordered by Him!

Written Works
Many of us often quote from the Bible, and we should! However, when we write books, manuals, blogs, articles, etc, we should be understand the laws that we are governed by. If we are using a quote, we should cite the source of it. If we quote from a book, we must follow protocol for citing sources in our written works. Writings published on the internet may be protected as well. Whether we are aware of the terms or not, we should never present works that we have been inspired by as our own.

Many versions of the Bible are not under copyright, but some versions are. For instance, the King James Version of the Bible is public domain; however, the NIV, NASB, NKJV, and many other translations are copywritten. When we publish works, we must research to see what permissions we have, or we may find ourselves in a court of law. If we study to show ourselves approved, we will not be ashamed! (2 Timothy 2:25)

Artistic Works and Logos
Many dance ministries use visual aids in ministry or to advertise an upcoming event. It is easy to right-click and save a picture to use for advertisments, websites, blogs, and more. If we use a protected work, we may have to pay fees and penalties if we did not obtain the proper licensing for it.

If another ministry or company has a logo that we like, we cannot simply take it and use it for ourselves. Paying a graphic designer to create a custom work may very well be worth it. Be careful though, even if you are not aware that a work is under protection, we can still be held liable for posting it on our websites and materials.

Music
This is a touchy area especially in the church. Many dance ministries use songs without permission for public worship, and in many cases, this is acceptable if we are not charging admission fees. If we take those same dances and sell them on DVD or upload them onto YouTube or a similar video service, we can be sued for copyright infringement. Does this means that we must use original works for every song? We do not have to go that far, but remember several times the Bible tells us to "sing unto the Lord a NEW song." Get WRITE church!

The Lord is concerned about our motives. Most movement ministers are not lawyers, but we can properly prepare ourselves if we take the necessary steps to combat the traps of the enemy. The Bible also lets us know in Hosea 4:6 that "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge." We cannot use the Holy Spirit or the Gospel as an excuse to take the gifts and talents of others and present them as our own. Even if our intentions were not to do so, the law protects creative works and we must adhere to them. Let's walk upright. We do not want to have a subpoena come to our doors to learn the lesson!

All Play and No Work

Dance and movement ministry has a growing presence on the internet and in the media. As many continue to make connections through social networking, there is also a danger lurking in the shadows of ignorance. Though internet access has definitely been used to bring glory to God, there is much temptation that lies at the door if we are not careful to exercise wisdom and discipline.

Anything exciting can become addictive. Many dancers spend countless hours online posting thoughts, quotes, observations, and opinions. When these activities get in the way of our responsibilities, we must not ignore them but make the necessary adjustments. We cannot remain babes, drinking milk only. We should welcome accountability in our lives, especially from those that love us.

Here are a few questions we must ask ourselves to know if we are compromising our families, ministries, or reputations online:

Do I spend hours of my day posting messages, even during work hours or designated family time?

Are the comments that I write edifying or just random thoughts?

Will the comments that I make in any way make me appear hypocritical in regards to the ministry God has entrusted me with?

Am I getting in arguments with people online that may cause more damage than good?

Can my comments be deemed inappropriate or do others often tell me that I am sharing "too much information?"

Did the time I spent online hinder me from writing my book, updating my website, rehearsing for upcoming ministry, or preparing myself for the future?

In any ministry context, we must accept the fact that how we present ourselves to the world can enhance or tarnish our ministries. There are healthy outlets for us to express ourselves, share our feelings, and connect with people. Opinions of men do not matter. Our behavior must agree with the Word of God if our faith is a lifestyle and not just a once-weekly phenomenon. We must ask ourselves at what cost are we willing to do harm to the Body to satisfy our own desires and need for self-expression.

I believe that the church must be relevant today. Dance Ministry should not be the same as it was 5 or 10 years ago. We must continue to grow in the things of God. With that said, the Lord does not change. We cannot call evil things good and good things evil if we walk in truth. He is still a Holy God. We must not handle the things of God without consulting Him about the proper order. When we aim to use secular means to reach the people of today, our motives matter. How far is too far?

Only the Lord can truly judge where we are in Him. When we receive the Holy Spirit, He will guide us into all truth. Fearing God means that there are certain things that He will reveal to us that shows us what pleases Him. When we aim to do a thing in with the motive to "reach" someone, we open the doorway for error. The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord. Jesus said if He would be lifted up, HE would draw all men unto Himself! We praise God for the diversity of movement ministry, but we must accept the fact that the Lord does not just accept "anything and everything" from us just because we do it in His name.

If we dance in sheer garments in the name of Jesus, is it ok because there was a soul saved afterwards? If we dance seductively in front of an audience and someone tells us they were blessed by it, does this make it acceptable? If He wants to reach someone, He will, but the end does not justify the means.

The Lord will hold each of us accountable for our actions. We must not take His name in vain. He gives us the liberty to dance, rejoice, praise, worship, sing, shout, and bring glory to His name. We must also remember that there is a time and season and purpose for everything. Let us make sure that we are moving in God's Divine timing.

An Open and Shut Case

The ministry of movement entails more than dancing. As a matter of fact, anyone can be a liturgical praise dancer. Not everyone is a true worshipper, movement minister, or servant of the Lord. The Lord observes our every step, so we must proceed with caution.

Beyond what we do in front of others, what we say can promote health or bring destruction to our ministries. The messages that we share include both the words we say and the messages we write for public observation. Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks!

If we are on public social networking forums, blogs, etc, and openly display sexual innuendos, negative talk, and double-mindedness, this will affect our ministries. If we appear to need intense emotional therapy before others, it will hamper their ability to receive the word from us. We must pray for wisdom! It's not that we have to be perfect, but we must realize that we have the ability to place a stumblingblock in the paths of others if we are not careful.

The enemy is crafty. The Bible reminds us in Proverbs 29:11 that a fool vents all his mind! If we are not students of the Word, we can find ourselves being the antithesis of Christian living. Does this mean that we cannot express ourselves with one another and confess our faults? Of course not. The question is, do we want to air out all of our imperfections on a community billboard? What we say can and will be used against us- good or bad. Let's not hinder the spread of the Gospel with our own foolishness...

User Friendly

The term "friendship" today is used very loosely. On many social networking sites, we are invited to confirm people as our "friends." This confirmation usually grants them acces to our profiles and other personal information. As a result, we can see commentary and photos that are uploaded by our friends onto these websites. This can prove to be quite an experience!

As more of us become connected, we may receive requests from people that we may not actually know, but have some mutual friends or other common interests. These sites can become awesome tools of reaching beyond our geographic locations to share common ideas, activities, and encouragement. If done correctly, this allows the Body to become more jointly fit together.

Many dance ministries are becoming acquainted online. On the other hand, we may meet someone at a conference or other ministry gathering, and then find them online to remain connected. With growing technology, we are able to stay in contact and updates for a few seconds a day instead of a several minute (or hour) phone call. Information dissemination can happen quickly and easily.

The danger for us lies in the temptation to relentlessly promote our events and happenings without thought of the extended ramifications. I have personally been "tagged" in photos and videos that I am in no way present in or connected to. Being tagged will usually lead someone to see the referenced item. Imagine my surprise when upon several occasions, I was in no way affiliated with the subject!

Why is this happening? People often tag videos with the names of popular people to drive "visitors" to the video or website. Maybe the people promoting the subject wanted to make sure that I saw the image or video link? I believe that we must walk in truth. If we are posting images and videos and do a little "creative advertising" to get people to take a look, we are in effect, lying.

Must we use one another without permission to promote our own agendas? Are we requeting people as "friends" only to enlarge our advertising bases? Do we gather friends to brag about how many people we have on our social networking pages, and then use them as marketing tools? People who use people soley for gain are not true friends. Let us continue to walk in integrity at all times, and not get caught up in the ways of the world around us...

DANCE MINISTRY DETOX
DMD was held in Las Vegas July 16th-18th. I must say that it was the best conference that Rain Rein Reign Ministries has hosted to date! Each speaker and workshop presenter was led of God to do the work to DETOX the affected areas of the Body. Healing, deliverance, and supernatural worship flowed! You Wear It Well!

Dance conferences often require planning in advance, even in the area of garments. Depending upon the length of the conference, often, at least two clothing changes are needed for each day: Daytime Sessions and Evening Sessions. If we pack wisely, we can avoid overpacking with sufficent attire for the event.

During the Day: Modest comfortable clothing is usually the standard. Plunging necklines, sleeveless shirts, short-shorts, or bare midriffs are deemed inappropriate attire for ministry movement conferences. We must consider others, even if it means making ourselves a bit less comfortable. Many groups wear their ministry t-shirts or other dance-related attire to movement and workshop sessions. Images and wording that do not bring honor to God may offend attendees. When in doubt, stick to solid colors.

During the Evening: Many dance conferences encourage wearing praise garments, even if you are not scheduled to dance for the service. Group praise and worship dance may be encouraged, and beautiful garments add to the celebration in the atmosphere. Some base the evening attire on the conference theme, some choose a certain color for a certain night, and others just encourage you to wear a dance ministry garment. For non-dancers, worship-worthy attire is often the standard.

If we build our wardrobes in advance, we may already have many of the garments needed for thematic services. It helps to have solid basics that can be dressed up or down with an overlay or ephod. Solid white or black palazzos, tops, and skirts can be combined with colorful coverings to match multiple themes. Often, vendors at ministry events sell overlays and basics that you can use in the future for other events.

Planning ahead gives us the financial liberty to purchase any additional garments needed well in advance. Conference hosts should take care to announce any desired wardrobe requests well in advance to give delegates enough time to prepare. Whatever the selection, don't bust your budget trying to buy new garments for each event.

How Would You Rate It?

There is a science to conference planning and event management. It may be exciting to think of potential speakers, class topics, dates, and locations, but if we do not plan for the reality of the business side of ministry, we may be headed for failure. Although we all need to hear from God in terms of what He specifically wants us to do, we can use Godly wisdom and expertise when planning events.

One issue that is often debated are registration costs for ministry conferences. In many cases, registration does not cover the complete cost of the event expenses. Because event hosts do not want conference cost to be out of reach, additional fundraising efforts are put in place. Many factors go into determining the price of admission. If the price is set too low, the burden of meeting the financial obligations falls on the event host. If the price is too high, attendance may be low and goals may not be met.

HOTELS
If the event is being hosted at a hotel, there are often costs associated with booking the meeting room space. Meeting room space is often determined by the amount of food & beverage purchased. In the case of most dance conferences, there is little to no F&B, so meeting room space is often charged to the organization by a daily rate. Depending on the size of the room, this could cost thousands of dollars! When purchasing food & beverage, the hotel will usually offset the costs of the meeting space by the amount of food purchased. If a pre-determined minimum is met, this will often result in low-cost to no-cost meeting room space.

Upon signing a contract with the hotel, an initial deposit is usually required, ranging from several hundred dollars to several thousand depending upon where the event is hosted and the projected total cost. Since this money is needed up front, event hosts may run an "Early Bird" Registration Rate to raise enough capital to cover these costs. As the event draws closer, several payments can be made to the venue, with payments usually due in full a few days before the event.

When dealing with hotels, we must be careful not to overestimate our attendance or amount of rooms needed, as this may end up costing us BIG BUCKS! Looking to cancel less than 30 days before a scheduled event? Be prepared to pay the piper. We may want to run the contract by a lawyer or other experienced event planner so that we do not run into any potentially devastating financial surprises. Even churches are charging facility usage fees that require a signed contract. Let's be sure to count the cost before building.

TRAVEL & ACCOMMODATIONS
If using speakers from outside of the event area, there are often travel costs associated with hosting them. Although some conferences encourage speakers to cover their own travel costs, many others provide travel arrangements and sleeping rooms for out of town guests at the expense of the ministry.

If the event is planned far enough in advance, we can save money on airfare and book our guests during optimal flight times or preferred airline carriers (all carriers are not created equal!). Hotel rooms may also be booked on behalf of the speakers, and in some instances, speakers may share rooms. Be sure to obtain permission before pairing up a speaker with a roommate.

Hotels charge a nightly rate for sleeping rooms, with payment in full due at check-out. If the event runs more than 2 days and several speakers are involved, this could also cost thousands of dollars. If you are not covering room service and incidentals, be sure to inform your speakers that these charges will be their responsibility. Regular Registration Rates may cover these costs, as well as go toward any related F&B.

ADMINISTRATION & MISCELLANEOUS EVENT EXPENSES
In many cases, there are other areas that event hosts must spend money. Need a conference logo? Planning to send out flyers? Handing out registration bags? Printing conference booklets? Hiring someone to design the location atmosphere? Hosting a dinner for speakers? Need a 1-800 number? Need a website? Shall I go on?

Conference extras can be the saving grace or the destruction of our ministry events. Little amounts can add up to much if we are not prepared for them. We must pray to determine if we really want or need something when it comes to our plans. What is not necessary is an expendable item. Let's make sure to have the needs in place before purchasing the optional items. Late Registration Rates may cover the printing of conference materials, but flyers and other promotional materials may need to take place earlier.

HONORARIUMS & LOVE OFFERINGS
We will not get into whether we agree or disagree with honorariums vs. love offerings. The reality is that bringing in speakers costs. Registrations and fundraising efforts can help offset the costs of these. If possible, we should try to have checks ready in advance and in envelopes so that we handle business with the greatest level of care and discretion.

LAST MINUTE NECESSITIES
Speakers may need transportation to and from the airport. If a car, van, or limo rental is needed, this is a cost the organization usually incurs. Gift baskets and welcome packets are other nice items to include for special guests. If we are providing meals for speakers or other allowances, we should factor this into our projected budgets. At-the-Door Registrations may provide some petty cash or money to help settle the final hotel bill.

REALITY CHECK
If we do not give people incentive to register early, we may not have the funds we need in time to meet our obligations. For many conferences, Group Registrations are offered discounts for booking a certain minimum number of registrations. Many people wait until the last minute to pay for registrations. If the majority of delegates did this, the event may be in jeopardy of cancellation.

Running a successful event takes more than faith. Our faith must have works to go along with it. We must pray and seek God and exercise good judgment when planning events. When we find out what works, we know that God will be pleased with our stewardship.

Summertime usually brings lots of dance and worship arts conferences with it. Because many students are out of school, it is popular to host events during this time. Although the bulk of conferences usually take place within this timeframe, there are many events throughout the year. With a little planning, we can navigate through them successfully.

There are some great strategies to use for ministry travel. Experience is a good teacher. If we plan to make our trip a smooth one, even if we encounter a few "bumps" on the road, we should be able to arrive unscathed. Planning well in advance will allow us to be able to coordinate the trip with money to spare. Ready to pack your bags?

Scheduling
If possible, we should schedule trips outside of our local area several months in advance. This will allow us sufficient rest time in between trips if we are attending several events throughout the year. Even if we will be gone for back-to-back events, planning ahead of time will allow us a smoother transition. If we are married or parents, this will also aid us in providing for our homes needs as well.

Financing
If we plan sufficiently, we can usually save money with early registration. Many events have a tiered payment system in which the rates increase as the event draws closer. There are several reasons for this, which I will discuss in a later post. Purchasing airline tickets early usually results in savings as well. Hotels usually offer discount rates for groups booking in a block by a certain cut-off date. Booking after this date usually results in higher costs. Planning to purchase these items by a target date usually mean big savings!

Trip Tips:

By Airplane:
Try to book flights that arrive at least several hours before the event starts. Departing flights can be scheduled in the evening, but try to avoid booking the last flight out in case of delayed or cancelled flights. Who wants to spend the night in an airport? Signing up for rewards programs or volunteering to be bumped for overbooked flights can get you free travel and reduce future expenses.

When packing luggage, take your MUST HAVE items on board with you. If there is a specific garment that you need, don't risk having to fill out a claim for lost or delayed baggage. This will reduce your stress and help you to remain prepared. Try to avoid overpacking. If possible, coordinate garments so that you do not have to take your entire wardrobe with you.

By Car:
Try to plan your drive before or after rush hour traffic. Hurry up and wait? I hope not... Make sure that your vehicle has been recently serviced, or use a reputable rental agency. It may seem obvious, but get gas before taking to the road. No one wants to be stuck 30 miles away from the next gas station or waiting for the tow truck to come and assist. When travelling with a group, make sure to factor in "wiggle room" as well as enough space for baggage.

Hotel Bookings:
Many hotels offer early check-in when arriving before the posted times. This usually depends on availability, but I have done this many times with success. You can also request a late check-out until a certain time without extra charges. You can always leave your bags with the bellman in case of a late flight. In many cases, registering under the room block helps with the success of the conference. Joining a frequent visitor rewards program also come with perks! Remember: other guests might not share your enthusiasm as you re-enact conference highlights late at night. Courtesy counts!

Dining Out:
We should not have to tell the saints to tip waitstaff appropriately, so I will just encourage you to show extra love and care. We are still ministering to those around us! We can reduce the amount of money spent on meals by eating no more than 2 paid meals per day. Breakfast can be replaced with a meal bar or other pre-packaged fruits and nourishment brought with you. Water purchases can be made at a nearby market or convenience store. The water bottles and snacks inside of hotel rooms are usually pretty pricey!

Make a List and Check it Twice!
To ease the stress of a hectic travel schedule, we can make lists of itmes we must pack of take with us in advance. This should prevent forgetting any necessary items and limit last-minute shopping.

Safety Tips:
If journeying abroad, make sure to take your passport and keep it safe at all times. We cannot assume that because we are at a Christian event that the thief will restrain himself. We should avoid carrying bulky purses or backpacks and avoid the wearing of flashy jewelry to help minimize the temptation. Trying to get back home without a wallet or identification can be a nightmare!

Taking care to make plans in advance will result in success. Even if something does not go as planned, when the Lord is with us, He will deliver us out of trouble. Enjoy your travels throughout the year, taking care to make it the best experience possible. See you soon!

Learning Curve

With the many conferences and events being promoted, some may ask, "Why should I attend?" Faith-based events abound and there are no lack of options for anyone desiring to be sharpened and trained. If you want to vacation and learn, you can choose to go to a conference held on an island or travel internationally. If you'd prefer to stay closer to home, there may be some local events near you.

We should all study to show ourselves approved unto God. Dance ministries and conferences and events have blessed me, but in going, I have also learned what not to do. Either way, my investment in the ministry of movement has been beneficial to me. Moving out beyond my geographic area has allowed me to meet dance and movement ministers from all over the world. I am blessed to know that we do not all praise Him the same way. We are not confined to one style of worship attire. We do not all dance to the same beat.

I have also learned that many people hosting events have the right intentions, but are unable to deliver results. Some events have been disorganized, poorly promoted, and exhibit a lack of the Lord's presence during the event. While promotion may help, the reputation of the event organizer or host organization usually determines if people will come out and support or not. Each and every time I attend an event-gone-wrong, I am reminded that there is still much work for us to do.

I entered into the conference hosting arena in 2003 because I saw a need for worship arts ministers to understand the magnitude of the God we serve. Many are perishing for lack of knowledge. I have also learned that teaching my opinion will not deliver anyone; the Word of the Lord will do the work. I am blessed to have hosted events that did not go as well as I had planned, because it taught me to trust in God every step of the way. I have hosted free events as well as paid events and have learned to be a good steward over both. By the grace of God, He has taught me to share my experience and insight to help others up along the way.

There is nothing more rewarding than obeying the will of God. We must all make the effort to grow through study of the Word and fellowship with like-minded believers. Where He leads me, I will follow.

We are to go into the world preaching the Gospel. Too often, emphasis is placed on preaching in the church arena. If we limit the definition of ministry to the church setting, how will we reach a lost and dying world?

It takes wisdom to win souls. How we conduct ourselves in our daily and professional lives will gain or lose souls for the Kingdom. As the entertainment and arts industries continue to grow, worship arts elements are appearing in movies, television, and other media outlets. We must know how to conduct ourselves in the midst of a myriad of circumstances. If we are not careful, the lure of fame and fortune may cause us to compromise. We can show forth light in the midst of darkness!

We must prepare ourselves now to be good stewards of His grace. When the doors of opportunity open, we should be ready to walk through them- not by chance, but by preparation. We should never run out of "oil," so that when the bridegroom comes, we are ready to go into the celebration. You've seen them... Those slightly see-through garments that leave little to the imagination. When coupled with movement, the appearance of dancers in cheap clothing is enough to make anyone blush. Sick and Tired!

Too often we ignore obvious "sicknesses" in the church. In the ministry of movement, persecution, ignorance, rebellion, strife, controlling behavior, and lack of wise counsel have cause deep pain for dancers and the Body at large. The aftermath is lame ministries lacking power and the ability to stand strong.

Many operating today are dancing while wounded spiritually and emotionally. Lack of healing results in bad attitudes, difficulty accepting correction, abusive behavior, cynicism, mistrust, misguidance, and fractured relationships on the part of numerous dancers. There are many sick among us...

Others are worn down by being taken advantage of in the name of "ministry." A growing sector of dancers are tired- TIRED of fighting... TIRED of doing the same thing... TIRED of trying to live right... TIRED of struggling. It's time to confront this state of being "sick and tired," and walk in the liberty of the Spirit!

We cannot passively stand by while the enemy wreaks havoc. Our God will fight for us, but we are also encouraged to wage war by wise counsel. When the Walls of Jericho came down, it was through obedience. When praise went forth before the battle, the enemy began to self-destruct. In the ministry of movement, we cannot be ignorant to what's going on behind the scenes.

Many ministries are in turmoil today. Financial pressure, family problems, personal challenges, struggling churches, uncertain living arrangements, and job prospects have burdened down many. We must decide that we WILL bless the Lord at all times!

Prayer and intercession must be a daily part of our lives as movement ministers. I want to take some time to encourage ministry event planners and address an alarming trend that is happening in the dance conference realm. I have written several times about how wonderful it is for dance ministries to seek training and development in the ministry of movement. Some may order books, DVDs, or other ministry-related products. Others invest money travelling to conferences locally and abroad. Travel over long distances can cost a significant amount of money that includes registration, airfare, hotel accommodations, food, and transportation arrangements. For groups, the expenses could amount to thousands of dollars!

When events are cancelled or postponed at the last minute, rumors abound. Questions surface as to why the event is not taking place including: Were there enough registrations? Did the conference host run out of funds? Will I get my money back if I have already paid registration? What about the non-refundable airline ticket that I purchased? Event cancellations can have a domino effect that spreads beyond the challenge of telling the world that the event will not take place. We could be affected by this for years... BUT GOD!

As an organization, when we cancel events, our reputations may be compromised. Although there are circumstances that may make cancellation inevitable, how we handle the aftermath will determine whether people will continue to trust us for the next event. We must notify any registered delegates as soon as possible, and refund them promptly. In any case, we must always obey God!

Conference hosts and event planners must continue to be good stewards through much prayer and discernment. We must ask the Lord concerning dates, location, speakers, theme, schedule, administration, and so much more! Too often we call not counting the cost "walking by faith," when we really must set budgets and forecast how the bill is to be paid. I have learned some difficult (and expensive) lessons myself in this area. Thank the Lord for miraculous deliverance! We must ask tough questions up front and not be afraid to conduct Kingdom business with confidence.

Finger-pointing is not going to help us, but Spirit-led planning will. I am encouraging every organization that had to cancel or postpone an event this year: Keep pressing on! For those who have been adversely affected or disappointed by conference cancellations or postponed events; please extend forgiveness. We are living in a time of financial difficulty, but do not want to stop supporting the events of other ministries because we suffered a few setbacks.

I encourage every event host to read books on conference and event management, improve your financial management, and seek God earnestly concerning His will for your ministry. I speak the truth in love. We are all in this together. Let's fight the good fight of faith!

Let's Get Technical! Ballet

Excellence is something that we have to work towards on an ongoing basis. When we make an offering to the Lord, we should give Him our very best. Not everyone in the ministry of movement will master the technical elements of dance, but those who dance lyrically should work to obtain a basic mastery of balance, positioning, placement, and safety.

Dance training on a regular basis may be out of reach for some, but if we can bring the training to us, we can still improve our technique. Taking ballet classes does not mean that our pieces have to include all of the elements that we have learned in class. The foundational concepts of ballet will help us be able to do the choreography that the Lord shows us with precision and with minimal injury.

Dance ministry leadership can be exciting and rewarding. After having done it for many years, if we are not careful, we can find ourselves weary and burned out. When we get to this point, we come to the unfortunate realization that we have missed it somewhere. It's time to get back to the place of complete reliance on God.

Some people are assigned to dance ministry leadership, but do not have the wisdom, skill, or anointing to carry it successfully. Others have a burden to lead, but become so self-reliant that they become the focal point of the dance ministry. These leaders often carry more assignments than they can accomplish, but neglect to delegate the work to other capable team members.

There can also come a time when we should have moved on or grown into our next assignment, but are living in the glory of yesteryear. This often results in ministries that are stagnant, lifeless, and lack Divine imprint. Instead of training others to lead after us, many are guarding their positions until the end. As it is often said, "There is no success without a successor."

In a corporate praise and worship setting, dancers must understand the difference between ministering a piece and being part of the worship unit. Dancers should not be the focus of activity in a praise and worship atmosphere. When we are on one accord with the singers and the musicians, there should be a corporate unity that demonstrates liberty in the Spirit!

The viewing congregation should not merely watch the dancers, but feel welcome enough to participate at their seats, or in the aisles, if possible. Praise and worship is not a time for us to demonstrate all of our technical skills; rather it is a time to encourage others to praise Him for themselves. We can do this by incorporating movements that the masses can do together with us, regardless of skill level.

Whether we incorporate dance, flags, streamers, billows, or banners, it can be done in a way that allows everyone to benefit from the praise and worship experience. It is not an easy task to assist leadership in any capacity. Whether someone supports in an administrative, choreographic, spiritual, or other supportive role, we must exercise wisdom with prayer to provide the appropriate aid. If we are not careful, we may find ourselves emotionally injured and bitter if we are serving leadership that neglects to keep God at the center.

Movement ministry leadership carries its own unique set of challenges. Dance leaders deal with many different personalities and are often personally invested in the lives of their team members. They serve as counselors, choreographers, teachers, spiritual advisers, financiers, transportation providers, coordinators, directors, visionaries, disciplinarians, and much more. Those who serve alongside ministry leadership must make prayer a large component of their duties.

On the other hand, it must be recognized when leadership turns into "bleedership," and willing servants are being treated as slaves instead of ministry partners. Dance leadership does not entitle someone to be waited on hand and foot while making unreasonable demands of everyone else. We must model ourselves after Christ's method of leadership: Teaching, discipling, empowering, and living the lives that we preach about.

Technical training will give us balance and stretch us creatively, but the most beautiful movement will not change lives unless it is inspired by God. There is a difference between movement and Divine choreography. When the Lord directs our steps, none of them shall slide!

Movement that marries the Gospel message will be replayed in the minds of people long after the song is done. Well-executed choreography will give us dances that can stand the test of time. Prayer and Biblical study work in conjunction with choreography for movement to minister to the people.

Some songs today may get us excited and immediately will bring a crowd to its feet. This does not indicate that the lyrics agree with the Word of God or follow sound doctrine. We must examine the words of the song in comparison with Scripture and then be sure that the movement agrees with the context of it all. If God said it, that settles it!

Master, or Pastor?

Many in the corporate church today struggle with the call to ministry working in conjunction with submission to authority. There are horror stories of how leadership may have hindered many potential leaders by "cursing" the ministries those who feel a need to venture outside of the four walls of the church. Reports abound of dance ministers leaving congregations after being told that "dance does not win souls."

On the other hand, there are some in the ministry of movement who desire to move out before the set time. We must each have a system of accountability in place, first to God. Those who are planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish! Before joining ourselves to an overseer, we must consult the Lord and not be led by emotions or perceived opportunity. The questions become, "Do we follow the Master (Jesus) or our Pastor? Is it possible for us to do both?"

Elder Christopher A. Bourne will navigate the healing process for the movement minister to be able to escape the hindrances that try to divide the flock from the Shepherd. He will provide insight, wisdom, and perspective as a Pastor who supports and understands the arts ministries.

We must continue to multiply our talents. When we present excellence unto the Lord, we make it a priority to serve Him with our whole hearts. Although technical training is not a requirement for one to participate in the ministry of movement, a varied vocabulary and Divine direction will give us longevity.

Dance technique cannot be mastered in one day; however, when we are exposed to a range of movement possibilities, we may discover hidden talents. There are many in movement ministry today who are "walking wounded." How can we effectively reach others if we have not dealt with our own sicknesses and diseases first? The issue is a spiritual one. Ignorance is not the problem; we are well aware of the issues we face. It's time to stop tolerating perpetual dysfunction amongst our own.

All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. We do not have to be perfect to spread the Gospel to others, but we should not be perpetrators. Let's take up our beds and walk!

Touch Not Mine Anointed

We are living in a fantasy if we think that Christians in ministry do not struggle with the flesh. When we are anointed, people with various weaknesses will be drawn to us. The more effective we are in the Body, the greater the temptation becomes. We should not use the trust and guidance that others may seek from us as an opportunity to indulge our own lusts and desires. We are to walk in righteousness and sin not.

The enemy wants to lure each of us into immorality. Because ministers of movement use our bodies for the glory of God, the adversary also wants to use our bodies to glorify himself. We have to resist the temptation to indulge in sexual sin if we have to run like our lives depend on it! We have to build ourselves up enough on faith in the Word to be able to flee the entrapments of the flesh.

Frequent travel, fellowship with each other, and affection between co-laborers can result in inappropriate relationships if we allow our boundaries to be compromised. In the church setting, frequent hugs, kisses, fellowship dinners, and casual conversation abound. We must be able to recognize when brotherly love develops into something more serious. Although it is natural to desire companionship and affection, outside of the Lord's guidelines, we can fall into temptation.

This concern does not only apply to dealings with the opposite gender. The world needs a Savior now more than ever before. If we are struggling with any areas of physical sin in our lives today, we can be forgiven. We must refrain from touching what is holy unto the Lord.

Full-Time Ministry or Unemployed?

Many dance ministers dream of the day when they can do ministry "full-time." This usually means that he or she can make enough income to support themselves while ministering freely without working a "secular" job. Some people have the notion that big paychecks will come from ministry assisgnments, and that hotel expenses, airfare, meals, and an honorarium will provide for all comforts desired. (For some, these comforts include a luxury vehicle and first class airfare!)

There is a difference between serving in ministry full-time and being unemployed. Losing a job does not mean that someone is now in full-time ministry, even though it can serve as a catalyst for it. If we are to leave the Corporate job sector to work in the ministry full-time, we must have a plan of action in place. Otherwise, we are merely unemployed and in need of work.

The reality is that full-time ministry requires hard work. Each and every one of us should be in full-time ministry, regardless of whether we receive checks for it or not! Those who labor in the Gospel realize the importance of being able to minister the Word freely, without the control of people who may wave a paycheck at them for expected services. As a result of variable love offerings and "church folk mentalities," many ministers have had to work to generate income that would supplement any love offerings or salaries received from a local church.

Many dance ministers today have also become entreprenuers through marketplace ministry. This is being done through product development including books, DVDs, garments, flags, training programs and other ministry-related inspirational products. While launching a Christian business may be great, if we are to maintain integrity in ministry, we must be diligent in product order fulfillment and excellent customer service. Being out on the road ministering does not excuse us from delivering our products on time!

Whatever the path the Lord blesses us to walk, we must not let money become the deciding factor for ministry. As I have quoted to many, "The problem is that we treat our ministries like businesses, and our businesses like ministries." If we are to operate as Kingdom entrepreneurs, we must do our homework concerning business licenses, product distribution options, production deadlines, tax laws, business insurance, website development, payment acceptance, branding, quality control... Get the picture?

Before we set our hearts on earning income solely through ministry, we must pray and obey the Lord. Too many are "pimping" the Gospel for unrighteous gain. When the Lord places something in our hands, He will cause us to go out and multiply our talents. Since our heart and treasure reside in the same place, let's make sure to set our affections on the Lord.

That Which Costs Me Nothing

There seems to be a "hustler" mentality running rampant through the church today. Many ministries would like you to volunteer your marketable skills and talents for unlimited access, while capitalizing on the profit for themselves. There is nothing wrong with choosing to donate time to the church and serving the ministry with no desire for profit. It is important that we examine ourselves daily to see if we are taking advantage of anyone unfairly.

It is often said that "You get what you pay for." Initially, many who would charge the going rate for services in the secular arena may feel honored to help someone or an organization at no cost. When the person or the organization continues to take advantage of this "free" service without ever offering anything to the laborer, the one donating his or her time may feel used or abused. It's one thing for people to give time and money from the heart. It's another to expect it eternally without thought or regard for the giver. There is no fee charged to attend Sunday morning services; however, the offering plate will be passed in anticipation that the people would like to see the ministry continue.

The mentality of getting something for nothing is running rampant through many dance ministries today. We should not expect garments for free just because we are in ministry. We should not hesitate to pay to attend conferences and events that will enrich us. If we have Kingdom businesses and the only websites that we use are "free," we may not be considered a legitimate business. When our business cards are ordered from free printing warehouses, the excellence factor may be diminished. Don't get me wrong, having printed materials and a website is better than having nothing at all!

Even though David was a king, when it came to the things of the Lord, he understood that his treasure and heart were connected. When David approached Arunah for a threshing floor, he could have gotten it for free just because of his position. David did not use his title to get "freebies" from people. Because the use of the threshing floor was to be dedicated to the Lord, David insisted that he would pay for it and not offer the Lord something that costs nothing.

When we invest our resources in ministry, it shows that we are making a sacrafice. There is a time to receive money, gifts, and the like, but we must make sure that we are not expecting over and above what is reasonable. When we cannot reward others monetarily, a little appreciation goes a long way. Even if someone decides to bless us with money, donated time, or other resources, we should take the time to give thanks for the blessing the Lord has allowed them to be in our lives.

In this age of growing technology, many movement ministers are connecting online and meeting new friends. I have written time and again how great it is to go worldwide with the Gospel. We must also use wisdom when engaging in cyber-activity.

I am surprised by some of the things that I see posted by others who proclaim the Gospel. In addition to posts containing mild to outright obscenity, questionable pictures are posted that can contradict the message we are trying to preach. In addition to these, people may begin to second-guess our ministries by the friendships that we claim online. For instance, if most of my friends boast of an affinity for narcotics, then it can be assumed that I am indulging in them. If we download videos that glorify fornication, we may be labeled in that category as well. By the way, many of our updates, friendships, and downloads are readily visible to all of our online "friends."

While many of us can comfortably say that we are not guilty of any of these offenses, we must always check our motives for the things that we post. Using the internet to advertise an event may be great (and cost effective), but when someone sees the same advertisement posted multiple times in a row, it may make us appear to be self-promoters without boundaries. If we send a public message to someone to try to make ourselves appear really important, others may think that we are self-ambitious.

There is a difference between sharing a testimony and bragging. A testimony brings glory to God by making it known that the Lord was the solution to the problem. Bragging is when we lead people to believe that through our own goodness and efforts, we were able to be victorious. The Lord is looking at our hearts. What is in our hearts will be revealed through what we say and write. Let's be careful not to reveal too much information.

Grace Period Expired

Obedience is crucial to success. A while back, I shared the testimony of how the Lord instructed me to write about dance ministry each day for an entire year. The task was completed and since then, the Lord has opened the windows of Heaven over my life. Although my current assignments require much work on my part (faith without works is dead), without the disipline that writing daily instilled in my life, I would not be ready for the doors He has now opened for me.

Sometimes we continue tasks beyond our appointed time. When we do this, we exhaust the grace that we have to maintain our dedication to the assignment. We place ourselves in danger when our once bubbling brooks turn into stagnant swamp water. What was awesome yesterday may indeed be a hindrance today. Let's not let our past successes become a set up for failure. God does not operate according to formulas. We must be diligent in seeking Him.

Faithfulness to the Lord is not based on a timeline. Serving in the same place for years is not faithfulness if we have been instructed to move forward long ago. Obedience determines faithfulness. When we are diligent to follow His instructions, He will reward us. If we continue to stay in a place, position, location, or assignment beyond our "grace period," we will find ourselves accomplishing tasks in our own strength.

There's Just So Many of Them!

It is exciting to see so many worship arts conferences spring up all over the world! In most cases, we are able to find workshops near us, or some that we may want to travel to. Deciding to attend a conference and workshop should be coupled with prayer, planning, and wisdom.

Not everyone with a website and a workshop is called to teach concerning the ministry of movement. Some of the best conferences that I have attended have been a result of word-of-mouth testimonies to the organization's effectiveness and spiritual power. Great advertising may be a good indicator of the type of quality that we may receive at a conference or workshop, but advertising is not enough. What we allow to be spoken into our lives can have a lasting impact. When the Lord leads us, we will leave enriched and encouraged to grow in our field.

We also cannot disqualify an event based on assumptions. There are many new conferences hosted that can be awesome because they are untainted by the "celebrity factor" of other conferences. We can learn something from the experts in movement ministry as well as the up-and-coming visionaries in the making. Whether we learn what to do or what not to do, we are learning nevertheless.

Here are some of my personal tips on selecting dance conferences and workshops:

1- Support Other Ministries!
Let's not fall into the trap of attending events only as invited guests.

2- Do Your Homework!
Research conferences options online, via brochures, or flyers, and ask about the ministry hosting the event from others who may be familiar with their work. If planning to travel to a different country or culture, we should research the region so that we are not ignorant or offensive concerning the people we will encounter. Pray!

3- Plan Ahead!
Many conferences are listed several months (or even years) in advance. Arranging our calendars to make sure that we are not neglecting our other responsibilities is important.

4- Manage Your Money!
If we would like to travel to another destination to attend a dance ministry event, we should begin setting aside funds for travel without going into debt. We can designate a certain date to buy a plane ticket, secure registration, book hotel accommodations, arrange transportation, etc. We should also budget for food and items that we may want to purchase from vendors.

5- Don't Get Stuck In Tradition!
Just because we travel to a certain conference each year does not mean that we should not remain open to other possibilities. Staying in a comfort zone can actually do us more harm than good. If we are going to grow as movement ministers, we will have to do something that we've never done. "Behold, I do a new thing!"

We can learn so much from other people. Each of us should make it a priority to obtain some type of training throughout the year. We want to continue to give the Lord our very best. Each conference, workshop and event will allow us to develop further in ministry. It's time to enlarge the borders!

Dreams and Visions

Many of us have dreams and visions of where the Lord is leading us. If we do not keep our eyes on God, we may stray off of the path of His leading. When we trust Him and follow His direction, we will find ourselves in the place of peace and prosperity. Enter thou into the joy of the Lord!

I praise God for allowing me to see one of the visions that He has given me come to life. I recently launched Reign Dance Company after 4 years of praying and waiting on the Lord's timing. When the Lord gives me BIG vision, it is usually something that is for the future, and He gives me time to prepared for it so that it will last. I usually write the vision down and wait for Him to bring all of the pieces together. In planning for the dance company, I wrote down the class descriptions and the general vision for the company and waited on God.

In the meantime, he allowed me to meet many dancers who had a heart for worship and desire to experience powerful dance ministry. He has given me favor with print media, radio stations, and networking groups. Many pastors and church congregations have given me overwhelming love and support, including many dance ministries. To God be the glory!

It may seem strange to open up a new business in a "recession," but for us, this is a time of procession! I was blessed to secure a dance studio space that had been previously unavailable. To make it even sweeter, all of the hours that I requested were open in the facility! The location is freeway close, professional, and secure. Who can plan better than God?

When I filed the business paperwork for the dance company at the end of last year, many people approached me asking for dance ministry training, even though I had not publicized the fact that I was opening a dance company! The blessing was that when I was approached, I was not wearing a dance garment or even discussing dance ministry. It was by Divine design. I received this as confirmation of the Lord's leading.

As the news of the company spreads throughout the Las Vegas region, I have received several phone calls from churches desiring training and partnership with the dance company. I am a living witness that the Word of the Lord will not return void! He is sending me all of the help that I need. The time to obey Him is always RIGHT NOW!

Faith without works is dead. When waiting on the Lord, we have to keep ourselves in a place where He can use us whenever He needs to. If we are not prepared for open doors, we may miss our opportunity. A big issue that I have had to overcome is fear of the unknown and depending on my own resources to get things done. Where God guides, He provides. Write the vision, obey God, and watch dreams become reality.

Who Done It?

There always lies the temptation to try to make things happen for ourselves when we feel like our time has come. Launching new endeavors is wonderful when God is the Mastermind behind what we are aiming to accomplish. Everything done in the name of Jesus is not necessarily "Kingdom." Whenever we are building something, it must be commissioned by God, or else we are doing the work in vain.

We should not seek to praise ourselves through bragging or highlighting our own accomplishments in order to make someone else appear inferior. Even if this is not the intent, it can be the end result. There is room for all of us to coexist in the dance ministry realm. If we begin to think that we are more anointed, skilled, powerful, effective, popular, radical, or important than our fellow ministers of dance, we miss the essence of the importance of the Body. Although we may not all follow the same method of doing things, we should not think of ourselves more highly than we ought.

Sometimes dance ministers think that we are the "first" to do this or that. We may be the "first" in our area, but we should not take pioneering to the extreme and become prideful. Promoting our ministries or businesses should never reek of selfish ambition. There is nothing wrong with advertising to get the word out about something, but the words that we choose to use to promote events and businesses will expose what is inside of our hearts. God exalts the humble but resists the proud.

It is my personal belief that it is better to be asked to dance, teach, travel, and share than it is to call people to book ourselves on a worldwide tour. Having business cards ready when someone asks us about our ministries is great preparation, but hunting down potential clients unsolicited will have us labeled as self-ambitious. If we ever allow the thought to enter our minds that other dance ministries are powerless in comparison to us, then we will merit the same unfortunate ending as other prideful characters in the Scriptures.

Ministry conferences and events abound more than ever! While it is wonderful to see so many take an interest in worship arts training, there are some common courtesies that should fall into place when getting the word out about events.

Here are a few of my personal suggestions for advertising protocol:

Consider Your Target Audience
Is your e-mail list primarily worship artists and supporters? If not, a separate mailing list may need to be created so that the reader receives items of interest that is of specific interest to them. For instance, if I am not a bowler and I keep getting multiple e-mails about a bowling league, I may either delete the e-mail or stop opening e-mails from that particular sender entirely. If I am really feeling overloaded by an individual, I may mark the message as SPAM.

Too Much of a Good Thing?
If there is no new news to report about an event, it may not make sense to send out multiple e-mails on the same day or even over a short time period. We want people to be excited about our events, but not feel as though we are trying to "hustle" them out of their money. We also do not want to leave the impression that we have an ulterior motive. If there is a new development or important announcement to make, it may be a good idea to let prospective attendees know. If not, who wants to read the same information over and over again?

Social Networking Sidebar:
If using MySpace or a smiliar social networking site, posting multiple bulletins in a row may be unsettling as well to someone not associated with the event. Multiple bulletin postings give a sense of desperation and appear as though the main focus of the poster is for personal gain. Oversaturating the board with personal posts pushes other information out of view. While that may be the goal of some posters, it also undermines the sharing efforts of others. Spreading them out over a period of time may serve as a reminder without appearing to be greedy. Posting comments of extremely large flyers or dance ministry videos on as many pages as possible may also raise some eyebrows... Not being considerate can get you deleted as a "friend."

Don't Be Pushy!
If someone is attending your event as a presenter or dancer, it may be a good idea for them to share it with others who may wish to join them. This choice should remain up to the individual. The invited individual may also need to consider his or her network and remain considerate as well. Blatantly demanding that someone send event information to his or her entire e-mail list may not only be offensive, but downright pushy. It may be especially questionable when the person receiving the email is not on the program, not in the area of the activity, and may not endorse your particular event.

Divine Advertisement
While we pray that we will receive maximum support for the events that we host, we must pray for Divine wisdom when promoting our gatherings. We must allow the Lord to raise us up in season, and also accept when it may not be time for us to have a multitude of people with us. We must trust God and not lean on people to sustain us. No one wants to feel bombarded with "junk mail" at home, in an inbox or online.

Tips for Success
Faithfulness in ministry yields results. If we are faithful over a few things, we will be made ruler over much. Showing success in the ability to handle small and medium-sized events with excellence will cause others to spread the word and bring even more people to experience what we have to offer. Advertising alone does not guarantee a great turnout. Jesus was followed by thousands as a result of the fruit of His ministry. Millions still follow Him today. The church in Acts grew out of word-of mouth. If we allow the Holy Spirit to lead us, we will lift up Jesus, and He will do the drawing.

In this time of "recession," we who labor for the sake of the gospel may be swayed by reports of what is going wrong in the world. In a time of massive layoffs, financial crisis, foreclosures, widespread anxiety, and general uncertainty, we cannot allow ourselves to be moved away from our priorities. This is not a time for dance ministers to sink into oblivion. It's time to move!

If God has called us into leadership, we must continue to pray and seek His instruction regarding how He would have us to operate in this season. Procrastination is no longer an option. Obedience is the pivotal point which will open doors or keep them closed. We must walk in Divine favor now more than ever before.

Many things that were once too expensive to obtain are now more affordable. If we continue to practice faithful stewardship, we will be able to accomplish the assignments given to us with minimal difficulty. Honestly answer the following questions:

What is the Lord telling you to do now that you have waited to long to act on?

Have you managed your finances well?

Are you serving in the area that you know God has called you to?

Is fear hindering you from starting that business or opening that facility?

Do you constantly make excuses for why you have not finished the work you started?

Have you prevented forging new relationships due to past hurts?

Are you still dreaming about something that should already be a reality?

This is not the season to delay! We can do all things through Christ Who strengthens us. We must pray for wisdom and guidance regarding any endeavor that we have set our hearts and minds on. When the Lord calls a thing into existence- IT IS SO!
